Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 Episode 1
There was a lot of discussion about how Brooklyn Nine-Nine would deal with the aftermath of murder of George Floyd and the way Americans now view the police, with it reported that already written scripts had been thrown out. It’s certainly got a very different feel to it now, the show used to be overtly positive in a daft but lovable manner, but now this feels like “A very special episode” as they deal with the way life has changed not only because of Black Lives Matter but also Covid-19. It’s certainly a move that should be respected, but also one I’m not entirely convinced by, this was always a comedy series which didn’t really feel set in the real world, what with the way serious crimes were dealt with in a whimsical manner, but now it feels pretty bleak what with Rosa having left the police force due to her disgust at the institutionalised racism, a number of speeches are made and the main plot revolves around the concept of whether it’s even possible to be a “good cop” any more, while a subplot involving Charles struggling to act in an appropriate manner with Terry felt laboured, and Holt admitting to Amy that he’s in a miserable place because of covid-19, the state of the police and his failing relationship with Kevin was upsetting to see. All of a sudden these cartoonish characters have been shoved in to the real world, and while the message is important, the episode felt disjointed and slightly off. Given that its the final season I do wonder if the show will continue in this direction, and I’m not sure if it should or not, but if it does I hope it does so in a slightly less heavy handed manner. ★★★

Ted Lasso – Season 2 Episode 4
I loved the first season of Ted Lasso and the second season started strongly too, but over the course of the last few episodes I’ve started to struggle with it, and genuinely find that quite upsetting as it’s such a feel good show that I want to adore. The problem I’m finding is that the first season worked because Ted (and Coach Beard) were both full of positivity and trying to change the world (or the team, at least) for the better and had to fight against not only the players but also an owner who was actively trying to get the team to lose. But now everyone’s on board with Ted’s view point and it feels a little unnatural, hell even Jamie Tart is a good guy now and the way he’s changed feels far too sudden. All of these issues were present in the Christmas themed episode, I was more forgiving for a long while as Christmas specials of all shows are normally a little over the top when he comes to being packed full of joyful happiness, but (and this might seem like a petty thing to moan about) I thought they completely fucked the ending, having a snow covered party in the street and then bloody Santa flying by was just taking the piss. I know I’m not meant to take that last bit seriously, but the end of the episode was representative of why I’ve not connected with this season so much, as you can definitely have too much of a good thing and they don’t seem to have realised that. It’s still a show I’m fond of, and Brett Goldstein’s Roy Kent is never less than enormous fun, but I wish it wasn’t quite so over the top on the happiness front and that at least a couple of character’s didn’t act in an unbelievably positive manner. ★★★

Miracle Workers Season 3 Episode 4
I wrote a cautiously optimistic review of the first episode a few weeks ago but wasn’t 100% certain it’d live up to the previous seasons, but I’m very pleased to report that such pessimism was completely misguided. It might not have the high concept of the first season, and it’s a shame Peter Serafinowicz only appeared in the second and didn’t become part of the regular cast, but otherwise I’ve no complaints at all. This is actually quite surprising too as this is a Western themed season with Steve Buscemi’s outlaw Benny The Teen guiding Reverend Ezekiel and his flock across America on their journey to Oregon, and I’ve a long standing and deeply annoying hatred of the Western genre. But this has been a constant delight, sending up the tropes associated with the dusty old American west, and three seasons in this is a cast who clearly love working together, chemistry like this just can’t be bought. And while all of the cast are on a fantastic form but this year it really is Daniel Radcliffe who deserves special acclaim, he’s never better as the initially stuffy Reverend Ezekiel who’s fallen for Geraldine Viswanathan’s Prudence, and his sexy dance to “We’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain” was one of the funniest things I’ve seen all year. ★★★★1/2

To Be Or Not To Be (1942)
A black comedy set in 1941, after Poland has been invaded an actor has to impersonate a professor working for the Nazis who has important knowledge about the resistance, and its complicated by his wife’s flirtatious relationship with a soldier and the real professor turning up dead. It’s a farcical affair with a lot of strong wordplay, mockery of actorly types and the odd dig at those pesky Nazis, and its pretty funny throughout, but for reasons I can’t quite explain I didn’t love it in the way that many do. ★★★3/4

Video Of The Week
Rob Brydon’s the one million and ninth comedian to set up his own podcast during the pandemic, but this is worth listening to / watching because of the calibre of his guests, and his amazingly fake hair which looks like he’s travelled back to the nineties and stolen Hugh Grant’s sexy mane. Anyhow, amusing as that is this interview is even better, featuring Bob Mortimer in particularly great form. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR_2c86t8v4

Link Of The Week
A documentary about The Day Today where many of the cast were reunited aired on Radio 4 this morning and you can hear it here, while this Guardian article makes a great case as to why the show is still very, very funny.
