Girls5Eva Season 1 Episodes 1 – 5
This great new Peacock show written by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, At Home With Amy Sedaris) is only produced by Tina Fey but it has the energy of 30 Rock, and is in some ways similar as it takes a behind the scenes look at an aspect of the entertainment industry, though this time it’s music rather than tv. It’s not just the modern era that the show sinks it’s claws in to either as we get to see a girl group reform almost twenty years after they split up thanks to a rapper called Little Stinker sampling their one hit, but also a selection of clips from when they were famous first time around. It’s packed with lots of smart observations about what it must have been like to be in a girl group back then (like how they’ve been friends ever since they met when they auditioned for the same man in a hotel room) but also what it’s like to mount a comeback all these years on, which is made all the harder by their extremely dodgy manager Larry refusing to allow them to sing their original songs as he owns the copyright, so they have to come up with new music. Doing so is harder than they initially thought too, at first they try and get their old writer Alf Music back, which gives Stephen Colbert the chance to camp it up with a daft accent, a silly wig and ridiculous dialogue, but then they decide to work it on themselves which takes the show in a much more satisfying direction. The snippets of their songs that we hear are consistently very funny, the four female leads (Busy Phillips, Paula Pell, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Sara Bareilles) are on superb form, and this is a show with a high gag rate that impressively delivers time and again, and I’m extremely pleased it’s already been given a second season as it’s so fantastic. ★★★★1/2

Creepshow – Night Of The Living Late Show
The fifth episode of the second season of this revival of this anthology horror, each week it’s a Twilight Zone / Black Mirror-esque affair telling a different spooky tale which almost always has some kind of twist or unhappy ending. This episode, written by stand up comedian and The Simpsons writer Dana Gould, saw sitcom stalwarts Justin Long and D’Arcy Corden as a husband and wife in a strained relationship, mainly as Long’s character has created a fancy VR system where you can be inserted in to your favourite films. So it’s a sort of mix of the Steve Martin film Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and that Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode Trials and Tribble-ations, where Long is placed in to footage from the 1972 film Horror Express, but it’s oddly irritating as Long is quite the tedious character, a fanboy who gushes over and over again about how excited he is about meeting his heroes Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and his messing around within the footage of that horror film isn’t that fun at all. To make it even more tedious Long gets it on with one of the fictional characters, his wife is understandably sick to death with him never paying her any attention and preferring the fictional world he spends lots of time in, so she heads in to the film to mess it all up for him, with predictably dark results. It’s a great idea, and the effects are pretty decent, but the script really lets this down, the dialogue is slightly embarrassing as Long gurns his way through the episode, and even Corden isn’t able to elevate the material to the point where it’s worth watching. Perhaps if you’re as big a fan of the source material as Long’s character claims to be you might enjoy it more, but that’s about the only scenario where this is worth viewing. ★1/2

Kevin Can Fuck Himself Season 1 Episode 1
Kevin McRoberts (Eric Petersen) is the kind of sitcom Dad who existed all too often in the nineties and early 2000s, a selfish slob who never listens to his wife and only cares about himself. Two or three decades ago we’d be meant to like him as well but that’s not the case here in this show which initially is shot as a multi-camera sitcom, and a very broad one at that, but after Kevin’s wife Allison (Annie Murphy) exits the living room it becomes a dark, single camera affair as we see that Allison is struggling with the misery that her husband causes. A mixture of both styles ensues, whenever Kevin’s onscreen it’s almost always a multi-camera affair, but when Allison is away from him it’s a stranger, more intriguing show. The slight problem is that when we’re watching Kevin being boorish and macho it’s a pretty damn tiresome effort, full of the kind of sitcom tropes that have been done to death, and I found myself hoping that he would fuck off each and every time so we could explore what life must be like for a put upon sitcom wife who’s far too often the butt of some quite horrible jokes. The big question is why Allison is sticking around after Kevin lets her down time after time, with the episode ending on him ignoring her dream move as he’s just been given a minor promotion, but hopefully the title suggests that is the direction the show is moving in and Murphy is so good in the lead role that I’m planning to stick around to find out, and just hope it lives up to its title. ★★★1/2

Phffft
Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon team up again for the second time in 1954 with another sort of romantic comedy, though this time they spend the majority of the film apart as at the beginning their characters divorce after eight years together, but once they’ve signed the papers both struggle with the single life. Their first film, It Should Happen To You, had much more charm, and much more Holliday too, and so was a lot better, while fine this concentrates too much on Lemmon’s antics and not enough on Judy. Still, Jack Carson and Kim Novak offer up strong support, and the ending’s fun, but this isn’t something I’d rush to watch unless you really love the cast. ★★★
