coming attractions 02072021Latest Update: This week we’ve news on Catherine Tate’s prison set Netflix sitcom, the second of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, Nathan Fielder’s new series, a new book which explores the much loved British sitcom Bottom, Apple Tv’s musical comedy Schmigadoon!, Lucy Beaumont’s adaptation of Israeli sitcom, and much much more.

Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens – Is back on our screens from August 18, with two episodes airing back to back at 10 p.m. “Inspired by Awkwafina’s own childhood in Queens, the show completed its first season in March of last year on a ratings upswing. Awkwafina plays Nora Lin, alongside co-stars BD Wong as Nora’s dad, Lori Tan Chinn as her grandmother and Bowen Yang as her cousin”. A little more info and a teaser trailer is here:

Billy Connolly Does… – Is a new five part documentary where Billy Connelly will reflect on stand up comedy and his life. “Billy Connolly says: “I’m really looking forward to sharing a few of my favourite moments from over the years… it’s been brilliant, and I hope you’ll come along for the ride!” Talking about the five hour-long episodes, the producers explains: “With exclusive access to one of Britain’s greatest and most influential comedians, Billy Connolly Does… will see Billy take a trip down memory lane as he gets to riff on his old sets from the past 50 years. He’ll also reflect back on how his views have (and haven’t) changed on a variety of topics, since he put the banjo down and started telling his shaggy dog stories. “Each episode will cover a particular topic, whether that’s work, sex, travel, childhood and parenthood or love and marriage and will showcase classic and hidden treasures of Billy’s stand-up routines. “The series, which is shot in and around his Florida home, will provide an intimate guide to Billy’s relationship with his material, as well as offering insights into his life”.

The Chair – Is a new Netflix series starring Sandra Oh. “The series will follow her efforts to meet the high expectations doled out to her as the first women of color department chair for Pembroke University’s English Department…The full cast features Jay Duplass as Professor Bill Dobson, Holland Taylor as Professor Joan Hambling, Bob Balaban as Professor Elliot Rentz, Nana Mensah as Professor Yaz McKay, David Morse as Dean Paul Larson, who all make up Kim’s underachieving faculty and staff at the fictional Pittsburgh university”. Confess, Fletch – Is a new take on the Fletch movies which will star Jon Hamm, Marcia Gay Harden and Kyle Machlachlan. “The story will follow the investigative reporter I.M. Fletcher (Hamm), “who finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, one in which he is pinned as the prime suspect. While on a quest to prove his innocence, Fletch is tasked with finding his fiancé’s stolen art collection, the only inheritance she’s acquired after her father goes missing and is presumed dead.””.

Fire Island – A romantic comedy from Spa Night director Andrew Ahn, this is set to star Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster. “Described as a modern day take on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” the film will center on two best friends embarking on a weeklong vacation to Fire Island — the historic gay escape off the southern shore of Long Island — with the help of cheap rosé and a cadre of eclectic friends”.

Frasier – The sequel series is picking up steam and Kelsey Grammar has said we can expect to see it on tv early next year.

Good Omens – Will be coming back for a second season, with Neil Gaiman and John Finnemore writing it.

Hard Cell – Catherine Tate has created a prison set sitcom for Netflix which will see her portraying multiple characters. “The producers describe the plot as follows: “A documentary crew follows the inmates and staff of HMP Woldsley capturing the penal system at its brutal humorous best.” Tate will also direct the series. She previously oversaw 2010 short Catherine Tate’s Little Cracker, but Hard Cell marks her series directing debut. Catherine Tate says: “Exciting aint it? Exciiiiiiiiiiiting!!!” The series is being produced by Leopard Pictures, the production company who also make BBC comedy drama Worzel Gummidge. Executive producer Kristian Smith, who runs Leopard Pictures, comments: “We cannot wait to show audiences on Netflix the inside of HMP Woldsley, our fictional prison occupied by the fantastic creations of Catherine Tate. This series is funny and touching all at once, revealing what life might be like in a British women’s correctional facility.””.

Hullraisers – Lucy Beaumont is working on this adaptation of an Israeli comedy series called Little Mom. “The channel says: “Hullraisers celebrates female talent, both on and off screen in a laugh-out-loud, chaotic comedy that embodies the ups and downs of life, friendship, and family.” The series will centre on three characters – Toni, Rana, and Paula – and will focus on their “dishevelled, messy and joyful lives.” Hull-native Leah Brotherhead, who starred as Kat in Zomboat!, will play Toni. Taj Atwal – recently seen as Elara in Truth Seekers – takes on the role of Rana. Meanwhile Sinead Matthews, perhaps best known to comedy fans as Jenny in Ideal, has signed up to play Paula. The producers comment: “The series explores the hilarious and agonising reality of what it is to be a working class woman juggling work, kids, demanding friends, family and frustrating parents from the school playground – all whilst trying to have some fun too.””

A League Of Their Own – Nick Offerman is the latest cast addition to Amazon’s A League of Their Own reboot series. “Offerman will play Casey “Dove” Porter, a benched MLB pitcher who takes on the role of coach for the Rockford Peaches. According to the streamer, the series will stay true to “the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.””.

Made For Love – Will be returning for a second season, though bar that the original cast is returning little is known about it.

Our Flag Means Death – Even more cast details have been announced including “Ewen Bremner, David Fane, Guz Khan, Matt Maher and Joel Fry, most recently seen in Disney’s “Cruella.” They will be joined alongside previously announced members Kristian Nairn, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Rory Kinnear, Con O’Neill Vico Ortiz, and “Flight of the Conchords” alum and series lead Rhys Darby. “Our Flag Means Death” is loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet (Darby), a pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate. The show was originally ordered at HBO Max in September 2020. The pirate comedy hails from writer, showrunner, and executive producer David Jenkins. Garrett Basch and Dan Halsted also serve as executive producers along with Taika Waititi, who will direct the pilot as well in addition to playing Blackbeard, history’s most infamous and feared buccaneer”.

The Rehearsal – Is Nathan Fielder’s new HBO series, which we’re incredibly excited about as Nathan For You is one of the finest comedies ever made. Little is known so far but according to The AV Club it’s “a show where Fielder “gives people the opportunity to rehearse for their own lives.””.

Schmigadoon! – A trailer for This Apple Tv+ musical comedy series is now online. It stars “Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael-Key as Melissa and Josh, a backpacking couple on relationship retreat who wander off and get trapped in the titular town, where everyone breaks into song and dance just like a 1940s Technicolor musical. The pastel-toned burg of Schmigadoon is filled with familiar faces as well, like Alan Cummings as the mayor, Kristin Chenoweth as a disapproving matron, Fred Armisen as her hapless pastor husband, Dove Cameron as a corn-fed beauty, Jane Krakowski as a musical diva, and why not, Martin Short as a leprechaun.

Succession – Will finally be returning in the Autumn.

Slo Pitch – This web series is to make on to our screens thanks to IFC. ““Slo Pitch is an offbeat comedy that spotlights a memorable group of women with championships and beer on their mind. This women’s softball team embraces and celebrates every dimension of the LGBTQ+ experience except winning,” IFC Blake Callaway GM said in a press release. “It’s especially great timing for us to pick up this series during Pride month, as we continue to seek fresh, unexpected creative voices, to feature on IFC.”.

Talking Bottom – Legendary comedians Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson’s hit sitcom Bottom first landed on BBC2 in 1991. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the creators of popular podcast Talking Bottom are set to release a companion book to delve deeper into the making of Bottom and honour its comedy legacy. Crowdfunding publisher Unbound today [Monday 28th June] launches its reader-funded campaign – meaning comedy fans must pledge their support to make the book, ‘Talking Bottom: A guide to the cult sitcom’, a reality. In return, all dedicated followers of Rik and Ade’s work can become a part of Bottom history by getting their names in the first ever unofficial guide to the much loved nineties sitcom – as well as a range of additional rewards on offer in exchange for their support including exclusive artwork and attendance at a one-off pub crawl in Hammersmith to celebrate the book’s publication. Available in paperback and digital formats, the book will take readers through the three series of the BBC2 hit sitcom, its five Live tour shows and the feature film Guest House Paradiso.

Tig Notaro: Drawn – This animated sort of stand up special will premiere on July 24 at 10 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max. “The hourlong animated comedy special blends Notaro’s signature voice and storytelling with an array of captivating artistic styles as she recounts a hospital bed proposal, a high school talent show gone awry, the repercussions of a dental procedure, unintentionally blowing off fellow comedian Jenny Slate and a road trip with Dolly Parton”.

Untitled Maya Rudolph Comedy – Joel Kim Booster is the latest cast addition to this series. “The untitled series follows Molly (Rudolph), a woman whose seemingly perfect life is upended after her husband leaves her with nothing but 87 billion dollars. Booster will play the role of Nicholas, Molly’s loyal assistant. Along with Booster and Rudolph, “Pose” alum Mj Rodriguez will also star in the series”.

The Weakest Link – Will be returning to our screens, but without Anne Robinson and comedian Romesh Ranganathan is the new host.
