coming attractions09042021Latest Update: This week we’ve news on new Starz sitcom RunThe World, the Dreaming Whilst Black pilot for the BBC, a feminist porn comedy from HBO, Natalie Morales in another new series, Hi-De-Hi! star Jeffrey Holland return to the sitcom world, a one off Mythic Quest special before the second season begins, and much more.

Bucktown – Two more cast members have been added to this forthcoming ABC multi-cam pilot, Annie Gonzalez (“Gentefied”) and Sofia Capanna. “Per the show’s logline, the comedy follows Amy (Woodward) who, after being dumped by her boyfriend and kicked out of her apartment on the eve of a big promotion, finds refuge at her mom Helen’s (Lynch) house in the blue-collar neighborhood where she grew up. The 12-time Emmy nominee’s character, Helen, is described as rough around the edges and salty as hell, but the most loyal woman you’ll ever meet. Amy reconnects with her quirky, off-beat teenage niece, Jodeci (Capanna) who is living at Helen’s house due to Amy’s sister’s latest rehab stint. Jodeci has had a few knocks in life but that hasn’t dimmed her optimism. But, Amy resolves to stay when she realizes that her mom and niece aren’t quite equipped to go it alone. Capanna is making her acting debut on “Bucktown.””

Don Rodolfo – Winner of the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer Ciarán Dowd has adapted his critically acclaimed live show Don Rodolfo into a television short for the screen, airing at 10.00pm on Thursday 22nd April on BBC Two. Co-written with Tom Parry (Pappy’s, Badults), the ten-minute short is directed by Tom Marshall (Ted Lasso, Chewing Gum, Famalam) and produced by Avalon. Don Rodolfo is a total butthead, a shameless libertine and the greatest swordsman the world has ever seen. Now barricaded inside a remote tavern, surrounded by the Catalan army and facing almost certain death, Rodolfo has ten minutes to drink a bottle of Valdepañas and tell his epic tale… This opening chapter will see Ciarán reprise his award-winning character alongside Jayde Adams (Good Omens, Alma’s Not Normal), Ariyon Bakare (His Dark Materials, Rogue One) and Abbie Hern (The Twilight Zone, The Pact).

Dreaming Whilst Black – Up-and-coming film-maker Adjani Salmon is making a pilot for the BBC. “Dipping in and out of reality it follows aspiring filmmaker Kwabena, played by Salmon, as he tries to get his script commissioned despite his family’s disappointment and complicated personal life. He said: ‘After such a phenomenal response to the web series, where we found an audience who really connected to Kwabena’s journey, I’m happy we’ve made our show for TV. I’m excited to share this story with our earliest and new audiences alike.’ The cast for the show – which will drop on BBC Three’s iPlayer channel on Monday April 19 – includes Will Hislop, Alexander Owen, Toby Williams and Tom Stourton, all familiar from the live comedy circuit.”

Drunk History – Is to return online, with short episodes focusing on Black History. “Stand-ups Jamali Maddix, Kevin ‘KG Tha Comedian’ Garry, Travis Jay, Desiree Burch and Thanyia Moore are among those who will be narrating the six, eight-minute episodes.”

Duncanville – Has been given a third season before the second airs.

Friends Reunion – This one off interview with the cast was filmed this week, though when it airs has yet to be announced.

Girls5Eva – This new Peacock comedy produced by Tina Fey will debut on May 5th. “The show follows a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ‘90s — now grown women balancing spouses, jobs and kids — reuniting after a young rapper samples their song. The series stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps. ” More info and a short trailer can be found here:

Let’s Be Real – Returns to Fox on April 29 at 8:30 p.m. “Following last fall’s comedy special, the new episodes will cover the year’s politics and pop culture news through topical sketches, celebrity cameos, remote pieces and lots of puppets. Previously featured puppets, such as President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former president Donald Trump, former vice president Mike Pence and Kanye West will return alongside new puppets including Dr. Anthony Fauci, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Ted Cruz, Kim Kardashian and LeBron James. The show is written and executive produced by Robert Smigel”.

The Loneliest Boy In The World – Ben Miller is to appear in this comedy horror movie which has been described as “a satire on the suburban family values of the American Dream from Fisherman’s Friends writer Piers Ashworth”.

Madea – Showtime has ordered multiple scripts from Tyler Perry about his famous character. “Per the official description of the project, long before she was the force of nature known as Madea she was a smart, fierce, irresistible, dangerous, crazy 20-something black woman named Mabel Simmons. When she moved to Atlanta in 1972 she set the city – and the world – on fire.”

Meet The Richardsons – Will be returning for a third series. “Returning to Dave on Thursday, the semi-improvised mockumentary – in which Beaumont and her husband, fellow comic Jon Richardson, portray a heightened version of their marriage, raising their daughter Elsie – will conclude with the couple contemplating leaving Hebden Bridge and moving to London.”

Minx – HBO Max are making a feminist porn comedy set in the 1970’s. “The series is about an “earnest young feminist” in ‘70s Los Angeles who teams up with a “low-rent publisher” to create the first porn magazine targeted toward women, with Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson set to star—because who says “L.A. guy in the ‘70s publishing an erotic magazine for women” better than Nick Miller? (Absolutely nobody.)”

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 – Will be coming back as a new kickstarter campaign has been launched which is now fully funded. “Series creator Joel Hodgson announced Wednesday that the show has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to create a new, independent season of the series. The current goal is to raise at least $2 million to create new episodes of the beloved cult show and what Hodgson has dubbed the Gizmoplex, an online platform on which the show and related content will be released in the future.”

Mythic Quest – A one off special is planned which will air on April 16th, ahead of the second season debuting in May. ” Entitled “Everlight,” the episode will debut just ahead of the series’ Season 2 premiere on May 7. Guest star Sir Anthony Hopkins will lend his voice to the episode. Following the events of the “Mythic Quest: Quarantine” special episode, the new 30-minute story sees the creative team returning to the office for their annual Everlight party, with Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (McElhenney) rigging a live-action role play tournament in favor of the underdog”.

Run The World – This new Starz sitcom ”will premiere on May 16. Set in Harlem, the series follows a group of smart, funny, and vibrant thirty-something Black women who are fiercely loyal best friends and navigating career highs and lows, hookups and heartbreaks that causes them to re-evaluate who they are and where they are going. “Run The World” stars Amber Stevens West, Andrea Bordeaux, Bresha Webb, Corbin Reid, Stephen Bishop, Tosin Morohunfola, Erika Alexander, Nick Sagar, Jay Walker and guest star Tonya Pinkins.” A trailer for it can be found here:

Simply Ken – Former Hi-De-Hi! star Jeffrey Holland is to star in this sitcom pilot “set in 1980s Sheffield with his wife, Judy Buxton, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal. The actor, who played soft-hearted comic Spike Dixon in the long-running BBC One holiday camp comedy, co-stars in Simply Ken, playing the father of the title character. Co-written by and starring Craig Shepherd (Shameless) as the misanthropic Ken Codd – a man who’s lost everything, his wife, his home, his job, his fridge and his washing machine – his most important relationship is with his daughter Gwendolen (Ellie Blackburn).”

Star Trek Lower Decks – Season 2 will premier on Paramount+ on August 12th, and there’s a short trailer here:

Untitled Sarah Cooper/Cindy Chupack pilot – Natalie Morales (“The Little Things”), Amy Landecker (“Transparent”) and Alice Lee (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) are to star in this sitcom based on TikTok star Sarah Cooper’s book How to Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings. “The pilot, which is described as a look into three women at different stages in their careers at a male-dominated company, hails from CBS Studios and PatMa Productions. Morales is set to play Joanna, a conflict-averse, people-pleasing middle manager at small tech firm Lucent Muse. New hire Elyse (Lee) challenges her “go along to get along” career philosophy. She lives with her boyfriend of two years — a sweet, loyal guy who might be too sweet and loyal for her.”.
