Comedy Snippets: Save The Bill Murray, Bridge And Tunnel +

comedy snippets 31012021Short reviews of comedy old and new, and other bits of info which don’t fit anywhere else on the site, updated weekly.

Save The Bill Murray Episode 1
A seven part sitcom that’s been made during the pandemic, this is only available for those supporting comedy venue The Bill Murray on Patreon, which if you can afford three pounds a month should be everyone in London / the country as it’s right up there with the best comedy venues and manages to get some huge names despite being rather small. In this opening episode it all looks a little bleak as during these covid times no one is out and about, and Tim Key is doing a gig there which has only sold one ticket, but we soon find out that’s intentional as he’s easing himself back in to performing. Key’s superb, performing mostly new material and trying not to get too frustrated by the various people who interrupt the gig, and the rest of the cast are really great as well. It might not look like the glossiest of sitcoms but it’s far funnier than the majority of professionally produced comedies, and it’s something which made me laugh out loud a lot during its fifteen minute running time, so I’m now really looking forward to future episodes, especially as the likes of Adam Buxton, James Acaster, Jamali Maddix and Maria Bamford are set to appear. ★★★★. Bridge And Tunnel Season 1 Episode 1
Edward Burns shot to fame in the mid-nineties with She’s the One and The Brothers McMullen and has worked reasonably steadily since, but he’s a director I’ve never found that fascinating. His films are often overly sincere pieces which take themselves too seriously, packed full of dialogue which might be naturalistic but which is fairly mundane as well. But despite not particularly liking his earlier work I went in with an open mind to his latest tv show and hoped that this eighties set comedy drama might be a little livelier, a little more enjoyable than his other films and tv shows, but unfortunately it’s not to be as it’s yet another tv series featuring attractive characters flirting with each other and nothing of interest happens in the first episode at all. Centred around Jimmy (Sam Vartholomeos), he’s just graduated from college and hooked up with his ex-girlfriend Jill (Caitlin Stasey) the moment he got home, but everyone’s dreading their being reunited as Jimmy was such a tedious twat when they broke up before. His Dad’s not impressed with him either and delivers a cliché filled lecture early on about the importance of “Keeping your eyes on the prize” and a job on the National Geographic in four weeks time, and the morning after it’s just lots of bland characters talking about the relationship and the practicality of them getting back together. The dialogue is uninspired, the character’s annoying, and you would have to pay me to watch another single second of this pointless nonsense, and a hell of a lot of money at that. ★

The Unsinkable Molly Brown
Debbie Reynolds is the rather feisty Colorado lass who leaves her papa in search of riches in what’s partially a true story, though with a fair amount of fiction thrown in for free, as Molly then gets waylaid when she meets sexy old Johnny J. Brown (Harve Presnell). Luckily for her after she accidentally burns the three hundred thousand dollars he’d just made by selling a silver mine he strikes it rich a second time when he finds a gold mine by chance, though both find the life of the rich and idle to be a little boring and their posh neighbours are snobby shits, and so they head to Europe in the hope of becoming more cultured. Upon returning to the US after a disastrous party turns in to a huge brawl they split up and she heads back to Europe, though of course she and Johnny are meant to be even though her journey home includes a trip on the Titanic. That last bit (which really did happen) is rushed, and the sinking of the boat is unintentionally funny, but otherwise this is a fairly decent musical with great performances from Reynolds and Presnell, it could have done with a couple more songs in the middle, and a couple of catchier numbers in general, but otherwise this is all good clean fun. ★★★1/2

Penguin Highway
An anime comedy drama, Ayoama is a young and strangely breast obsessed boy who becomes fascinated by a group of penguins that have suddenly appeared in the city, and it seems like they have been magically created by Onee-San, a young woman who Ayoama befriends. Then a fellow classmate discovers a floating ball of water in a field and everything becomes even odder in this incredibly charming and beautifully animated film, the ending might be a little slight but it’s still a lovely way to spend two hours. ★★★★

Video Of The Week
Last year we recommended the first in the Truffaut For Kids series, and now they’re back with a second episode which is just as funny, and this time they’ve also managed to get Alex Song-Xia (The Week Of, The Tonight Show), Felipe Dieppa (Dora The Explorer, Dan In Real Life), Becky Chicoine (Mr. Robot, The Other Two) and others involved to sing the praises of French new wave cinema in a way that made me laugh a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9s4v6Ro0cA

Link Of The Week
Comedian Jon Savitt has recently put together a short digital book entitled “Read This When You’re Sad”, which for many of us in these pandemic times is probably rather often, and while it’s a very simple affair and wouldn’t take more than ten to fifteen minutes to read in total, it’s a nicely funny work with a lot of amusing thoughts and suggestions. https://www.jonsavittwrites.com/read-this-when-youre-sad
