Search Party Season 4 Episode 5 and 6
Early on in the fifth episode of this latest season Dory is drugged up and Chip has been reading the book “Mind Control For The Curious Civilian”, and I found myself wondering if this very bizarre but still just about enjoyable fourth season was finally going to overstep the mark, if it was going to contain a plot line that was too over the top even for this show. And with the sixth episode I kind of think it has, I hope I’m wrong, I hope it isn’t going in the direction it looks to be, but the portrayal of Dory’s breakdown and mental illness and Chip’s attempt at brainwashing just don’t sit right with me, it doesn’t feel real or believable. I’m not saying that it’s impossible for someone to have a reaction that is similar to Dory’s, but we needed to see a hell of a lot more of it for it to not seem all a bit silly, with a couple of scenes of Chip playing with dolls while pumping Dory full of some mysterious drug being a little absurd. There are hints that Dory is just in denial, what with the flashbacks to her in the trunk of the car, but I’m not certain right now that the show is working and the storyline needed much more time to develop. It’s a little contrived too, what with Dory happening to run in to Elliot’s ex-fiancé Mark on the first trip out of the house, and Elliot, Portia and Drew’s attempts at finding Dory have felt a little lucky as well, especially when it came to discovering Chip’s picture on the food packaging. It’s still a show I’m enjoying, but with an awful lot of caveats, and frustratingly I’ve a lot of doubts that the fourth season will have a satisfying ending. ★★★1/4

Red Oaks
This Amazon series ran for three seasons and was notable for getting indie directors like Hal Hartley, Amy Heckerling, David Gordon Green and Gregg Araki involved behind the scenes as it told the story of David (Craig Roberts), a young aimless college student who during the summer holidays worked at a local country club. His family and friends and romantic interests are a large part of it, and though it had a bit of a slow start it was gently amusing and often quite sweet, while providing one or two big laughs an episode. It also has Paul Reiser and Richard Kind’s best roles (and performances) in decades, while the rest of the cast are largely on top form, including your lad from Submarine. Something of an issue was the pacing, it suffered from inertia at times, and in the third season it became hard to be enamoured with the lead character, but due to the directors it looked superb, the scripts were often filled with charm, and the ending mostly satisfied. ★★★1/2

The Humans by Matt Haig
When a mathematician solves a complex problem that could advance humanity in astonishing ways, an alien race decide humanity is not ready for such a thing and send one of their agents to kill him, take over his life and destroy all evidence of his work. Which he does at first, but there’s a problem in that the alien slowly becomes enamoured with humanity, which is going to cause all manner of unpleasantness for him and us. It’s a funny read, which examines what it means to be human in mostly amusing ways, and if it’s very slightly patronising on occasion the majority of it is enjoyable stuff. ★★★

Mirai
Anime where young boy Kun (unfortunately pronounced “Coon”) is enormously jealous of his new baby sister Mirai, and struggles with the anger he feels towards her. It’s a slice of life piece made stranger as the family’s magical garden appears to let Kun communicate with their dog Yukkon, talk to a Mirai from the future, and meet his mother and grandfather in the past, though all of it appears to be just his over active imagination. There’s no overreaching narrative so occasionally it feels a little aimless, but it’s sweet and quite funny early on, though occasionally frustrates as it doesn’t have a huge amount to say other than parenting is hard, jealousy of siblings might not be the best thing to have, while it suggests a few ideas as to how children establish their identities, and while I liked the first half of it a fair bit I struggled with the second. ★★★1/4

Video Of The Week
A reworded version of the Friends theme tune adapted to apply to the events of the eighties He Man movie may not sound like a recipe for hilarity, but it’s surprisingly fun, and the channel is worth checking out for other odd musical moments too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQUvQ-_3CqE
