Sir Bernard’s Stately Homes Series 1 Episode 1

Long before Matt Lucas and David Walliams were famous for apologising for being racist, and before they made their sketch shows Come Fly With Me and Little Britain, they teamed up together to make this short six part series that consisted of ten minute episodes. The central idea is that Sir Bernard Chumley (Lucas) is presenting a series on stately homes, but after meeting Walliams character the two go off on a quest to find a “Golden Potato” that will win them a year’s supply of crisps. Most of the time it’s just Chumley rambling away about how he was in a film about Nelson with Peter Ustinov and makes digs about his weight, while Walliams annoys him a bit and then at the end Chumley ropes in Walliams to re-enacting the end of the film, which is predictably awful. Walliams is at his most annoying here in a role which is the comedy equivalent of having all of your teeth pulled out without any anaesthetic, I originally watched this with the intention of reviewing all six episodes but it’s so awful that I quit after just one episode and will never watch a second more of it. As well as wasting Lucas’s talents I was amazed to discover it was directed by Edgar Wright, but I can only presume it was a director for hire affair as it’s completely lacking in style, and he wasn’t allowed to bring any of his own personality to it. ★

Taskmaster UK Series 10 Episodes 2 – 7
This latest series of Taskmaster, the first on Channel 4 instead of Dave, is thankfully no different from any of the others and the line up of contestants has been as strong as it ever was. Though that said there’s normally one person who isn’t all that every year (with David Baddiel and Iain Stirling being the weaker links in the past two series) and surprisingly this year it’s Richard Herring. I thought his ultra competitiveness would have led to a lot of funny moments, in his podcast he’s always going on and on about his appearances on game shows and his desperation to win, but with Taskmaster it’s meant he’s done fairly well points wise but there’s been a distinct lack of imagination with his efforts, and during the tasks he rarely tries to challenge the rules or even break them, which is when the show can be at it’s best. Still, otherwise it’s been an enormous amount of fun, the social distancing and lack of a studio audience hasn’t notably effected it in any ways, and Greg and Alex’s weird friendship has been just as funny as it always was, if not more so now that Alex is standing up for himself a little, and so I look forward to it lasting on Channel 4 for many years to come. ★★★★

Dead Snow
Norwegian daftness with a bunch of medical students who are holed up in a cabin in the woo- oh wait, it’s a mountain, and a snowy one at that. After old man Exposition briefly appears to tell them how a bunch of Nazis once froze to death in the mountains and that it’s an evil place, soon the body count starts piling up as a bunch of Nazi Zombies are all pissy about being the undead. As all too often wit this sort of fare it takes about a third of the movie before it starts being enjoyable, but at least it delivers on the OTT gore front after that, and they especially seem to like fucking about with intestines which weirdly turns out was something I didn’t tire of. ★★★

The Bad and the Beautiful
Jonathan Shields (Kirk Douglas) is a film producer who can’t get anyone to take his calls, but we soon learn it used to be a very different story. This wry comedy drama is told in separate flashbacks as we discover just how and why he screwed director Fred Amiel (Barry Sullivan), star Georgia Lorrison (Lana Turner) and screenwriter James Lee Bartlow (Dick Powell) over. The first section with Sullivan’s director is the best, and contains the funniest moments, but it slips in to melodrama with Turner’s part and while of interest Powell’s segment isn’t as good as the first. A mixed bag then, and a slightly frustrating one as the first section is so good but afterwards alas the quality dips. ★★★

Video Of The Week
As we all know, Christmas is going to be very different this year for nearly everyone, which has led to Jon Savitt coming up with this very funny song about zoom holidays which contains a twist which had me laughing a great deal. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CH6SeCFHhl_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Link Of The Week
Why is humour so rarely treated as high art? asks this Guardian article, and it’s a good question too, which they go some way in answering here. https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2020/oct/26/solved-why-is-humour-so-rarely-treated-as-high-art
