Comedy Snippets: Mini Tv & Film Reviews

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Sacha Baron Cohen surprised everyone recently by revealing that he’d made a sequel to 2006’s Borat, which was a largely funny affair with one stand out sequence, the hotel wrestling scene, that made me laugh harder than anything had in years. When the sequel was announced many suggested that the character was old hat and a little tired now, and I have to confess to having similar feelings, but I was completely wrong to do so as it’s an extremely funny film. Anyone who says you can’t make decent jokes about Trump is proven wrong again and again here, and the Trump cartoon that Borat’s daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova) watches is especially superb, but it also picks on various other aspects of American culture, including how to lure a sugar daddy, the inherent racism and sexism found everywhere, pro-life shits, debutante balls, and even how some reacted poorly to the coronavirus, all with aplomb. Performing a horrendously offensive song in public and the Rudy Giuliani interview are both gasp out loud moments, and along with the satirical elements there’s a nice slice of good old fashioned silliness too, all of which combines to make this something I’m extremely fond of. The film addresses the fact that everyone recognises Borat in a smart and funny way, and his daughter is a great addition too, Bakalova is a fantastic find and matches Baron Cohen in every scene. Maybe occasionally some of the gags are a bit obvious, the google porn bit especially, but largely this is once again a great deal of fun with an impressively high gag rate, and Sacha Baron Cohen deserves to have another big hit on his hands. ★★★★

On The Rocks
Sofia Coppola reunites with Bill Murray in this dry, dull comedy where Laura (Rashida Jones) starts to have concerns that her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) might be cheating on her, partially as he’s away on business trips all the time, including on her birthday. Her father Felix (Murray) cheated a lot on Laura’s mother and so he encourages Laura’s suspicions, and the two spend a lot of time investigating the matter, though most of the time it’s just them sitting around talking nonsense. The problem is that Murray’s a bit of a smug know it all, and though he and Laura have various conversations about the nature of men and women, relationships, fidelity, desire and sex, none of them are particularly illuminating or anything you won’t have heard before in films far, far better than this. Coppola photographs her locations beautifully and the performances are decent enough, with Jenny Slate popping up as a self-obsessed friend and getting the best lines, but it’s let down by a very tepid script, one that doesn’t offer up anything that original or interesting and this ultimately feels pretty pointless. ★1/2

Baroness Von Sketch Show Season 5 Episode 3
Sketch shows rarely last that long due to the need to either come up with a huge amount of new scenarios or characters each week, or if they rely on returning characters they have to work out ways to keep them fresh and funny, so it’s impressive indeed that this all female Canadian sketch show has quietly being going on for five seasons now. They don’t rely on recurring characters either which to me makes it even more worthy of kudos, and so in this particular episode they explored a number of diverse subjects including the difficulties of taking off a sports bras, how superheroes never help with the underlying problems society has, a dating app for garbage people, the government spying on normal every day individuals, an eagle stealing babies and what happens when a broken up couple seek refuge in the same location during a zombie apocalypse. All of these contain some really strong and fun dialogue and the performances from the cast are really great too, and it’s a series that never feels lazy or predictable, which is quite the feat. Apparently this is to be the last season and the show is sadly coming to an end this year but I wish it wasn’t as it still feels very fresh, original and innovative. ★★★★

The Palm Beach Story
Preston Sturges directed this fast talking rom-com where Gerry (Claudette Colbert) wants to divorce her husband Tom (Joel McCrea) because they’re so poor, and she thinks he’ll find success if he doesn’t have to pay for her upkeep. When she heads off to Palm Beach to get divorced she meets millionaire J.D. Hackensacker III (Rudy Vallee) and his crazy sister Maud (Mary Astor), who’s easily the best character in the piece, and hijinks ensue. It starts off well, and the sequence on the train with the gun toting millionaires is fantastic, but it sags around the half way point and though it picks up towards the end despite being very likeable it’s not a movie I love, quite possibly as Joel McCrea is so bloody drab in it. ★★★1/2

Video Of The Week
Matthew Holness is best known for Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place and the horror film Possum, but he has made a few other comedies, including Smutch, a short film that debuted on Sky Arts about a horror author (because Holness sure does love playing such a thing!) with a bladder issue who runs afoul of the undead. It’s got the feel of a Public Information Film from the 70’s and is sometimes stark and brutal, but it is also very funny too. https://moxiepictures.com/uk/directors/matthew-holness/smutch/

Link Of The Week
Also on the comedy horror front, Nick Frost, Samson Kayo and Simon Pegg’s Truth Seekers is released on Amazon this Friday, and the superb podcast A Very British Horror have an interview with Nick and Samson which is a fantastic listen and a great insight in to the show. https://averybritishhorror.podbean.com/
