Best Possible Taste: The Kenny Everett Story
Oliver Lansley takes on the role of Kenny Everett and Katherine Kelly is his wife Lee Everett-Alkin in this very traditional biopic which doesn’t do anything that will surprise or shock you, and just travels through Everett’s life at a brisk pace, giving us a very brief look at his childhood before concentrating on his career and love life. I’ve no issue with that though, biopics which do the “Before They Were Famous” thing are often dull, and the meat and bones of this particular production are all about how Kenny struggles with his self-destructive urges and how he was fired a lot, and though it plays fast and loose with the truth on occasion it never stretching things too far so that it’s annoyingly false. As well as his career it explores his seuality and his relationship with his wife, and is mostly a warm, affectionate look at his life and his relationship with Lee, and both Lansley and Kelly are absolutely superb in the lead roles, with Lansley especially deserving of kudos for capturing Everett’s manic energy and the various different characters he created. Due to time constraints certain aspects of his life are missed out and it’s a shame certain periods of his career weren’t explored further, like his friendship with The Beatles and how he went on tour with them in the mid-sixties, but if we were to get the whole story it would probably need to be a 6 hours mini-series at the very least. Maybe that will be made one day, I certainly hope so, but for the time being this is more than worth watching whether you were a fan of his or not.

Fantabulosa
Michael Sheen stars as Kenneth Williams in this feature length drama based on his diaries which were published to great acclaim after Williams’ tragic demise. Said diaries are enormously detailed so it was never going to manage to cover all aspects of his life without being about eighty hours long, but we’re given a pretty well rounded summary of what the entries are like as we see snippets of his personal life (mostly revolving around sex and his stomach / bottom trouble) mixed with his thoughts about his theatre, tv and film appearances. In the early scenes Sheen occasionally plays it a little too broad but most of the time it’s a touching, affecting portrayal, with much of the dialogue a mixture of the gross and the very wry, though it’s also shot through with tragedy what with his relationship with his father and Joe Orton, and struggles with depression. It does concentrate a little too much on his personal life for my liking, and I would have liked to have seen more of his thoughts on the films and tv shows he made, but otherwise I’ve no complaints and this is a touching and fascinating exploration of the great man’s life.

Cor Blimey
A look at the romance between Carry On stars Sid James (Geoffrey Hutchings) and Barbara Windsor (Samantha Spiro), and though they have an affair the problem is that both are married so it never develops in to the relationship either wanted. It’s a bittersweet affair then, but an endearing one, and the most impressive thing it does it make Sid James sympathetic as initially he comes across as a right old leech, but half way through you get to see a gentler, sweeter side. There’s lots of footage of both of their lives on the sets of various Carry On films too, from the great ones to, well, Carry On Emmanuelle, a film no one should be subjected to, and due to this Cor Blimey’s my favourite of these three very British biopics, as you get a real insight in to what it was like working on such films. Spiro’s also especially fantastic as Windsor, she captures her perfectly, while Hutchings is very good too – though my only complaint is that I’m not sure we needed to see his cum face (and how I wish I was joking about this, but I’m not), and now I’m scarred for life and nothing can change that.

Greed
I’ve run out of biopics of British comedians to watch alas, but this is vaguely along those lines as it’s all about a high street retailer called Richard McCready (Steve Coogan) who is clearly based on Phillip Green. Some of the satire works, McCready’s portrayed as an abject cunt and then some at times, and the horrors of how his businesses caused a huge amount of misery are quite grim, but it’s not vicious enough, and at times portrays McCready in a sympathetic light which is hard to believe given his actions throughout the film. Worst of all is the ending is just beyond ridiculous, it’s very, very silly and not believable in the slightest, and it makes it impossible to take the film seriously when the opposite should apply.

Video Of The Week
As we’re mostly looking at some older British comedy this week, here’s a clip from The Two Ronnies, albeit a very odd one which took me quite by surprise, as we see their version of a sequel to a classic fairy tale which is a bizarre and strange (but quite funny) affair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaNWnsoM0eA

Link Of The Week
And finally here’s a great article about the 90’s sitcom Heil Honey I’m Home, which caused so much controversy that only one episode was ever aired, even though, as tends to be the case, those who wanted to see it banned probably never even saw it. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20200925-the-long-lost-hitler-sitcom-that-caused-outrage
