Comedy Snippets: Wild Life, Semi-Detached +

Wild Life
A new animated show created by Adam Davies (a short film called The Itching, and that seems to be about it) along with Magical Girl Friendship Squad Origins this is SyFy’s attempt at getting in on Adult Swim’s market, so it’s a 12 minute per episode affair set in a post apocalyptic world where the animals are all living together in a zoo and rather chatty, and the few humans they meet are hideously mutated. The main characters are a drug taking koala called Darby, a Cheetah called Glenn who’s trying to avoid violence, a dolphin that Glenn fancies called Marnie, and none of them are that likeable, while the rest of the animals are either weird or annoying. If it all sounds a little lolrandom, then yes, yes it is, indeed this appears to be thrown together without any real love, it’s just all about the animals acting in bizarre or shitty ways to each other or being enormously violent. All of which shouldn’t mean that it isn’t funny, there’s a lot of joy to be had by being insanely idiotic and all that sort of thing, but this feels so routine, so by the numbers, the kind of ugly animation that you’ll have seen online decades ago.

Semi-Detached Series 1 Episode 1
Some people will probably love the very manic, very stressed sitcom that is Semi-Detached, but watching Lee Mack’s Stuart essentially have a nervous breakdown and spend twenty four minutes in a permanently miserable state of mind, sobbing and whining the whole time, just isn’t my idea of a good time. It’s one of those farcical shows that builds and builds until the end, as he has to put up with an incredibly selfish father, brother, wife and neighbours, all of whom make demands on either his time or wallet, with his fear that his marriage might be over with being the driving force of this first episode as his wife April (Ellie White) doesn’t think he’s fun anymore, which is pretty understandable given that they’ve a four month old baby, but whenever he asks for help from others it comes with strings attached. Oh, and it’s a real time comedy apparently, not that they make any use of that concept in this first episode, and it just tends to mean you get scenes of people dashing about rather than some effective editing. I can recognise the places where it’s meant to be funny, but witnessing a man at this level of distress as people are shitty towards him just isn’t my cup of tea, and this being a sitcom there’s a number of contrivances (Stuart accidentally takes a sod load of drugs, a neighbour thinks her husband’s going to kill himself but of course he isn’t) all of which I found vaguely irritating. It’s a shame as I’m very fond of the cast, Mack and White especially, but I guess this is a case where it’s a show that’s just not for me.

Limmy’s Other Stuff
Limmy’s been startling honest about his mental health issues over the years and his biography is apparently such a brutal read that I’m waiting for the world to be in a much better place before I even begin starting it. So before this was announced he revealed that it would be his final ever tv show as he found working in the industry too stressful, and it’s a sort of mini-retrospective showing some of the videos he produced before he was well known, while he was famous, along with what he’s currently doing with his life now. Given how much content he’s produced online it was always going to disappoint and only give us a tiny glimpse of his work, but despite that I’m still surprised how poor this was. The first couple of videos were his first ever shown online and fun to see him looking ridiculously young, but that’s about it, and early sketches which were developed further in Limmy’s Show just highlighted how the tv version was a lot better. A selection of his vines (6 second videos for a now defunct site) were the highlight, and the only really funny part of the show, before it ended with a few clips of him streaming live, which is how he now hopes to earn a living, but none of them were anywhere close to being as good as his professional work. I can’t help but wish he’d gone out on a stronger note, that the chosen clips had been stronger, but I wish him all the best, obviously, and given his issues with mental health if doing the streaming thing makes him happy that’s all that really matters.

O Lucky Man
A right oddity this, as Malcolm McDowell starts out as a coffee salesman but his life spirals out of control, sometimes there’s lashings of satire of Britain of the seventies, the painful amount of corruption found in all walks of life and the evils of capitalism in general, and it offers up a nihilistic view for sure, but other times it’s surreal and strange and I wasn’t quite sure what point it was trying to make. At three hours it’s a bit of a marathon of a film and though there are a lot of parts which are strong (McDowell as a salesman oop North, the hospital trials, his flirtation with Helen Mirren and betrayal by her father) at times it left me a little cold, and the ending perplexed.

Video Of The Week
Story Time With Silcox is a new 10 part series of videos from Mark Silcox where he tells the tales, but as you might’ve guessed he puts his own unique spin on them, and very funny they are too.

Link Of The Week
Hip Hop’s Laughing Stock is a Radio 4 show presented by Joe Jacobs where he explores humour in the genre, and it is a great listen indeed.
