Getting access to fantastic stand-up comedy has never been easier, and this means you no longer need to fly to New York and get a table at the Cellar to see some of the world’s funniest comedians. Who are these comedians? Well, at least one of them is named Josh Johnson. An accomplished stand-up comic as well as a writer on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Josh has performed at clubs, colleges, and festivals all over the world. If it’s got a stage, he’ll tell jokes on it. He’s the real deal, folks.
Living in New York, by way of Chicago, Johnson has earned himself some impressive credits. He made his late night debut with a phenomenal set on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he was a former writer and performer. Josh was named one of Just for Laughs ‘New Faces’ in 2016 and one of Comedy Central’s ‘Comics to Watch’ in 2015, so it wouldn’t make much sense to call him a “new face” in the year of our Lord: whenever you’re reading this. However, some speculate (me, for instance) that this star is only beginning to rise.
Johnson premiered his album I Like You on Comedy Central in 2017 where he casually dissects topics such as fraternity parties, getting mugged while urinating, and the noises you may or may not intend to make in the gym. Josh draws the audience in with a natural duality, using his laid back demeanour to, only mostly, hide the fact that he’s strung tighter than a rhino’s corset. All his jokes follow a calculated rhythm, but a conversational tone, leading the audience exactly where he wants them before tickling them with the feather of misdirection.
It’s almost frustrating to watch someone as talented as Josh Johnson. You immediately realize that they are funny in every minute aspect. He has funny eyeballs. Seriously, watch him. His innocent face and wide-eyed stare seems to convey a kind of incredulousness, mostly at himself. “I know! Can you BELIEVE I just said that?” But at the same time, there is a manic energy in his gaze that makes you wonder if he doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing.
If you’d like to check Josh Johnson out for yourself, he released a 30-minute special on Netflix for their series The Comedy Lineup in 2018. As a part of the LOUD & CLEAR Tour, he is on the road with comedian Trevor Noah until Oct. 2nd. Josh has appeared on CONAN and on several Comedy Central programs, including @Midnight, Hart of The City, and The New Negroes. Comedy Central also released his digital series GENIES that he created with Luke Mones. If all of this wasn’t enough to stoke your furnace, his story ‘Catfishing the KKK’ has amassed over 8 million hits on YouTube.
Very few comedians leave such a lasting impression as quickly as Josh Johnson. When not on tour, Josh can be seen performing regularly at the Comedy Cellar. You don’t necessarily have to go to New York to see the world’s funniest comedians, but I’ll bet Josh is even better live.
