Corporate Season 3 Episodes 2, 3 and 4
I’ll be reviewing the series finale shortly after it airs but couldn’t wait until then to praise this truly fantastic Comedy Central show, which this year is absolutely on fire, the first two seasons were superb stuff but this latest batch of episodes elevates it to one of my all time favourite series. Over the course of these three episodes it’s plunged in to darkness as it’s explored Jake’s suicidal tendencies (with Bob Odenkirk voicing his “Black dog” beautifully) in a insightful, sensitive but also often shockingly honest manner, given Grace the chance to shine as she forged a friendship with Christian at the expense of the one she had with Karen (allowing Lance Reddick to be even more amazing than he usually is) and then examined ratings culture in a very manner as Jake was stalked by a company he bought a car from and Matt was forced to give John constant affirmation. It’s a show which is so fucking smart it almost hurts, and though the satire is often razor sharp it’s sometimes nicely daft too, so along with a fair sprinkling of desolation there’s been Matt as Mary Poppins and John imagining he has hair and pretending to comb it. Plus the fourth episode featured both Lauren Lapkuss and Paul F. Tompkins, so if you had any doubts over watching it, well, they surely must have been dismissed now, and if they haven’t, well, watching the first episode of season one should be enough to have you falling madly in love with it.

Central Park Season 1 Episodes 9 and 10
I’ve been struggling with this show for a while now as anyone who read the previous Comedy Snippets mini-reviews will know, but I stuck with it in the hope that it might come to a strong close. It did, thankfully, but the penultimate episode was one of the poorest as Bitsy continued to be a very annoying villain and never an enjoyable one, Owen and Paige were largely wet, the narrator managed to be even worse than those three, and the kids were still the only good thing about the series. Their story involved a Home Alone 2 themed walking tour which contained a lot of very silly jokes and ideas, and a really great song too, but even though it was great it wasn’t enough to save the whole thing. At least the finale saw the show finally find it’s feet but considering that after the fairly fun first episode the following eight were such a very mixed bag it’s really not good enough, and I think the only reason I liked the tenth was because there was just one main plotline involving everyone instead of a number of bland strands featuring characters I don’t get on with doing annoying things, with only Cole and Molly occasionally popping up to do something funny. It’s frustrating however as though the show ended with everything vaguely wrapped up, Bitsy’s wish to destroy the park is still ongoing and I’d really hoped that would be resolved or she’d die, preferably in a suicide pact with Helen, and neither thing happened irritatingly. I’m aware that this review is fairly late too, as the series ended a few weeks ago, but it took me ages to finally persuade myself to watch it, and if it wasn’t a musical and a summer in the middle of a pandemic I’m not sure I would have bothered. Though some of the songs were often enjoyable, my disdain for 72% of the characters meant that I’ve struggled with it way too often, and unless the reviews are very positive I doubt I’ll bother with the second season.

Opening Night
Topher Grace is a former actor who hates musicals, which might be a problem as he’s working as a stage manager on one opening this very night on Broadway. I’d been recommended this as a must see musical but it’s not really a proper one, more of a rather slight satire of Broadway that has a couple of original songs in it, but they’re few and far apart and though fine they’re nothing that special, and elsewhere it’s occasionally a bit of a jukebox musical and I’m not fond of those. Perhaps if I hadn’t been expecting a traditional musical I might not have been felt so let down by it, and I liked a few parts, with appearances from Anne Heche, Brian Huskey, Zach Cregger and Paul Scheer’s often making me laugh, but overall it was only okay and nothing more than that. Also, as an aside, Kether Donohue is prominently billed but only in it for a blink of an eye, while according to the credits Peter Serafinowicz supposedly plays a character called Waldo and I didn’t spot him once, not even when I skipped through the movie afterwards trying to find him, and he’s not listed on imdb either so I can only presume he was cut from the movie, so if like me your fans of both and thought it might be worth watching because of them, prepare to be very disappointed.

Only Lovers Left Alive
Tom Hiddleston’s a depressed vampire hanging about Detroit making Sigur Ros-esque music, while Tilda Swinton’s his wife who drops in to try to cure poor old Tom’s depression, which is largely due to humanity really not impressing him right now.  Identifiably a Jim Jarmusch movie, it’s suitably melancholy at times yet has a wry sense of humour, though the odd line of dialogue is a clunker. It’s also definitely a little pretentious at certain points, but I was in a forgiving mood as it’s certainly an interesting film, beautifully shot, and any movie which has John Hurt playing Christopher Marlowe as a centuries old vampire has to be worthy of your time.

Video Of The Week
The Rocky Interactive Horror Show was released back in 1999, a truly terrible pc game which seems irritating to play in the extreme, but it has led to this fun video at least, where a guy plays it and tries (and quite possibly fails) to stay sane, and if you want another reason to watch it, Sir Christopher Lee is on hand to occasionally narrate the game too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWfkeDDObn8

Link Of The Week
The Lost Fringe is a superb series of photographs of shows which were due to take place at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, so if you feel like laughing and then feeling a bit sad, this is the site for you. https://www.theotherrichard.com/THE-LOST-FRINGE/thumbs
