Comedy Snippets: Mini Tv & Film Reviews – 09/08/2020

comedy snippets 09082020Short reviews of comedy old and new, and other bits of info which don’t fit anywhere else on the site, updated weekly.

Die Hart Season 1 Episode 1
Kevin Hart stars as himself in this latest Quibi series which is a sort of spoof of action films, where after a wince inducing appearance on a chat show Hart cracks and says his latest film is garbage, mainly as he’s sick of being the comedy sidekick. Afterwards his agent is understandably pissed and Hart might be in trouble career wise, at least until he meets director Claude Van De Velde (who seems quite Herzog-esque, though has supposedly directed four of the six most successful action movies of all time) who agrees to cast him in his next movie if Hart completes course at an “Action Star School” run by Ron Wilcox (John Travolta). Some rather mild mockery of Hollywood ways follows, which in the light of Quibi’s other recent industry satire, Dummy, seems rather lightweight, though this is more a parody of egotistical actors than those responsible for writing the scripts. Hart’s okay if almost exactly the same as he is in everything he does (explaining why in real life he’s almost always the sidekick rather than the lead) but Travolta plays it rather broad, it’s not quite pantomime-esque but at the same time it’s not a million miles away, and he’s rarely amusing. There’s some fun to be had seeing Hart make a twat of himself and getting smacked in the face with a baseball bat, but though the physical comedy is mostly watchable the dialogue soon becomes tiresome, and a repetitive joke about Matt Damon’s career isn’t funny at the beginning and only becomes less so as it goes on. It’s at least not offensive or actively poor, but after watching two (short) episodes I’m not going to bother with the rest.

Middle England by Jonathan Coe
The third in the series about Benjamin Trotter and his family and friends after The Rotters Club and The Closed Circle, this examines Britain in the run up to and after Brexit. It’s initially fun to catch up with these characters but a lot of it feels really heavy handed (all old people are racist, the young are angry and self-obsessed) and when in one chapter he writes from the teenager’s point of view it feels like, well, not like any teenager I’ve ever met or heard speak, that’s for sure, and is embarrassingly clunky in places. When the novel follows Benjamin and his old school friend Doug about it’s sometimes quietly amusing, but Benjamin’s niece Sophie takes up a lot of the book and her relationship with her boyfriend / husband Ian is frustrating as she’s great but he’s quite the selfish racist idiot. A need to be forgiving is clearly the point Coe is attempting to suggest by the end, at least with the majority of Brexit voters in general, but it’s so patronisingly handled that I’m not convinced by the argument he makes, and even if you do agree some of the writing is so on the nose that it’s hard to enjoy. On the front cover it claims it’s a “Great Comedy” but apart from a few set pieces and the odd line of dialogue it mostly misfires (a sex scene where Ben’s girlfriend mistakes his penis for a candle is especially ludicrous) and it’s all a bit of a shame as normally I like Coe a great deal, but Middle England is such a laboured affair in places, with an ending that I hated in general, that it’ll take some very positive reviews from trusted sources to get me reading anything new that he produces now.

Sleeping With Other People
Back in college Jason Sudeikis fucked Alison Brie but then lost touch with her for twelve years, and now they’ve met up again and become friends who sort of want to fuck each other but then they don’t and they fuck other people instead, before fucking each other again. And yes, I have given away the ending there which would normally make me quite the shit, but in this case you could see how it was going to come to a close after five minutes, and unless you’re a fan of tepid rom-coms there’s not much here to enchant and entice you. Yes, the leads are appealing, and it has the (very) odd funny scene, but at best it’s only okay and ultimately there’s no reason for such a bland movie to exist.

The One and Only (aka Den Eneste Ene)
A Danish romcom where one couple are adopting a kid and another are trying to have one, hijinks ensue, one person ends up dead, and there’s a massively racist portrayal of an Italian fella. Apparently this was a big hit in Denmark and it’s cute in places, and a young Sofie Gråbøl has a decent enough role in it, but it’s all a bit nothing-y by and large and though there are some funny scenes it wasn’t a film that I particularly found to be that enjoyable. Which makes the fact that it was remade in the UK all the odder, though given that it stars both Patsy Kensit and Donna Air it might not come as a huge shock to learn that it is apparently even worse than the original.

Video(s) Of The Week
Alasdair Beckett-King’s been making some superb videos during 2020, including a fantastic David Lynch influenced affair which wonders what a Lynch themed Jack Daniels advert would be like, one where a comedian “destroys a monocle wearer”, while “The Birds Without Birds” is a beautifully constructed slice of surreal odness, and what if Jaws was set in the North of England is hilarious too, so his channel is a definite must watch and then some. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq5btGtqdn4CpvU0xTXaelA

Link Of The Week
Kevin McDonald has a new special out which airs tonight, and in order to promote it he’s taken part in this superb interview where as well as the show he discusses Kids In The Hall, how he got his start in the industy, and his work on other comedy series.
