Don’t Season 1 Episode 1
Hosted by Adam Scott, Don’t is a brand new comedy American game show where families have to try to win up to one hundred thousand dollars, and all they have have to do is not do things, which is less complicated than I’ve made it sound and mostly involves taking part in a number of challenges which are a sort of Taskmaster-lite affair with a bit of a quiz element occasionally thrown in. Among these challenges were a general knowledge quiz called “Don’t Get Tired” where if they get the wrong answer they were hit in the face by a giant tyre, “Don’t Blink” which saw the contestants given twenty grand but every time one of them blinked they lost five hundred dollars, and “Don’t Drink”, which featured one of the family eating spicy foods as he walked on a treadmill under hot lights and refused anything in liquid form. It’s a mixed affair, on the plus side Adam Scott’s light mockery was endearing and there’s an even funnier mysterious narrator who takes the piss out of the show / competitors (at one point amusingly commenting on the prize “If we’re being honest it’s much lower after taxes” and shortly afterwards saying “The Riley Family has never tasted actual lemonade as they mistakenly believe it to be dirty water”). But on the downside, and it’s quite the downside, Taskmaster is largely a delight because of the contestants taking part in the show, and in this opening episode The Riley Family were the absolute opposite. A bunch of loud idiots (which may sound harsh, but one was revealed to be a flat earther and may well have been the smartest of the group) they kept on saying painfully unfunny things throughout the show to the point where I was rooting for them to lose each game. Normally I wouldn’t bother watching something like this again but there’s not a huge amount of new, good tv being aired right now so I might give it another shot, though I really hope those taking part are a more likeable and amusing bunch as otherwise I’ll definitely be ditching it.

Central Park Series 1 Episodes 2 – 8
I’ve been struggling a little with this latest animated musical series, which is strange as I love the genre and am extremely fond of those who created it. The songs are all largely pretty decent too and so whenever anyone’s belting out a number I’m normally captivated, but the various storylines haven’t been that gripping. Weakest of all is the villain of the piece Bitsty, and her plans to buy up and then destroy the park, it’s clearly never going to happen so it’s a little hard to care about, but also journalist Paige (Kathryn Hahn) hasn’t been fleshed out that much and suffers due to being linked to Bitsy’s plot. Owen (Leslie Odom Jr.) isn’t that great either, he’s a little limp and a little bland, and though Molly (Kristen Bell) is fine her really enjoyable plot line about drawing a superhero comic book is forgotten about all too often, and a storyline revolving around narrator Birdie breaking the rules was downright weak. Thank the lord for Cole (Tituss Burgess) then, who has been a constant source of joy as he’s been downright hilarious and provided not only fantastic songs but also a lot of very funny moments, with his obsessions with various cute animals always being endearing and amusing, but if this wasn’t a musical I doubt I’d still be watching it, and if it doesn’t up its game I won’t be sticking around for a potential second season.

Giuseppe Makes A Movie
In this very unusual documentary former child star (and occasional adult actor) Giuseppe makes movies in and around the trailer park that he lives in, most of the time shooting them in only for two or three days and using either those who live in the park or homeless people as actors. It’s a slice of life affair as he and his producer (and father) Ed put the films together with a big chunk of the documentary seeing them making one of them, with the plot of it concerning a cow who’s given an all expenses paid holiday by the slaughter house he will eventually be murdered in, so you really can’t fault the ideas that he comes up with, even if the script and acting is sometimes a little lacking. Giuseppe shoots without rehearsals and feeds his actors the lines they’re to say so this isn’t exactly arthouse cinema at its finest either, but they’re undoubtedly unique movies and everyone involved is fully aware that they’re not exactly making the next big Hollywood smash, and are just having fun shooting them. It’s a film which is surprisingly charming albeit often very odd, the friendships and sense of camaraderie between those involved is genuinely touching, while the snippets of the films themselves are often hilarious, all of which combined make it a definite must watch.

Turbo Kid
A really daft pastiche of straight to video sci-fi flicks played pleasingly straight, it’s 1997 and after everything we worried about in the 80’s has gone wrong the world is a largely apocalyptic wasteland. The population are mostly blood thirsty types (including Michael Ironside in a superb turn as the main villain), but can one kid emulate his comic book hero and save the day? And will he get to fuck his cute robot friend? With the latter, no, no he won’t, it’s not that type of movie, but while drenched in blood and all rather sweary, and a very odd mix in general, it’s one that works really well, and if you’re fond of offbeat cult nonsense you’ll most likely enjoy it a lot.

Video Of The Week
Satirising the way Hollywood approaches diversity, this short sketch from Rohan Gupta is a sharp and pointed affair, and a very funny one too, as Gupta mocks the current approach often taken by film and tv makers and offers up his services in the hope that they might change their ways. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=584532745599090

Link Of The Week
Michael Cumming is the acclaimed director of Brass Eye, Toast Of London, The Mark Steel Lectures and The Mark Thomas Comedy Product among other shows, and in 2017 he released the selection of deleted scenes from Brass Eye that is Oxide Ghosts, a compilation of hilarious clips that is almost (though not quite) as good as the footage in the show. In this detailed and impressive interview he talks about working with Chris Morris and the making of Brass Eye, but also other elements of his career including King Rocker, the new documentary he’s made with Stewart Lee. https://www.shots.net/news/view/michael-cumming-notes-from-shatners-bassoon
