Man To Man With Dean Learner Series 1 Episode 1
I’m soon to make my first ever podcast appearance where we’ll be discussing Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, and due to that I caught the first episode of this spin-off series where Richard Ayoade’s Dean Learner interviews Matthew Holness’s Garth Marenghi. I rate Darkplace highly as you’ll hopefully soon hear, but this is a much more flawed series, a “Knowing Me, Knowing You With Alan Partridge” type affair as Ayoade interviews a number of unusual types with Matthew Holness playing a good few of them. Unfortunately it suffers from an overly loud and annoying studio audience who seem to find everything either man does is hysterical, and though there’s a fun fake advert for all of Garth’s 436 books in one giant package, a fairly amusing film clip where Ken Dagless (Holness) wages war against some giant wasps with the help of Sanchez (Matt Berry), and a trip to Garth’s house to see the paintings he draws is strong, the studio based interview itself is quite poor in places. Sure, there’s the odd funny line, Garth’s an egotistical type still (though a little humourless when compared to Dark Place) but a good few of the questions don’t lead to any amusing answers, and when Dean rambles away about toilets and parties and philosophy it’s just bland and unfunny. Perhaps the rest of the series will pick up and I do plan to watch one more to see what Holness is like when he’s facing Ayoade and not playing Garth Marenghi, but I’m not optimistic it’ll be anything close to being as good as its parent series.

James Ross – Leopardoptera
James Ross is one of my favourite people in comedy if only because a) he’s a very funny man indeed and b) he runs the superb Quantum Leopard night at 2Northdown in King’s Cross, which in the past year has seen the likes of Joseph Morpurgo, Bec Hill, The Delightful Sausage, Rachel Parris, Gabby Best, and Alasdair Beckett-King among many others perform, so yes, he really does know how to put on a great night. This special from 2015 shows he really knows how to put together an hour of fantastic comedy too, as he rattles through a number of routines on very different subjects at an impressive rate, including segments on where a selection of quite unique men should stand at urinals, the veneration of an audience member, a tale of how he once dated a wealthy woman whose parents tried to sabotage the relationship, and the diary of the time he worked from home, with it ending on a superb piece where he challenges lazy stand up subjects and with a withering sentence or two deconstructs them all. All of it’s bloody hilarious, he doesn’t let up from start to finish and there isn’t a weak section among the whole thing, and whether you pay a fiver for it from here: or watch it thanks to it’s a stand up special which is a definite must watch. ★★★★

No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July
I was very fond of Miranda July’s novel The First Bad Man but this is a lot less satisfying. Nearly all of the short stories in the collection revolve around unusual individuals struggling with loneliness, whether they’re in a relationship or not, and though there’s some tales that I enjoyed a lot (with one about a woman obsessed with Prince William being especially weirdly amusing), others don’t really go anywhere or don’t have anything to say that July hasn’t already written about elsewhere. Too many of the characters sound nigh on identical to each other as well, no matter their age or sex, and though it definitely has some merit I wish there had been a little more variation in the ideas and themes she explores.

Laughter In Paradise
After prankster Henry Russell (Hugh Griffith) dies he leaves fifty thousand pounds to four very different relatives, but there’s a catch for all involved as to receive the money Herbert (George Cole) has to rob the bank he works at, crime writer Deniston (Alastair Sim) has to spend a month in prison, the hoity toity Agnes (Fay Compton) has to work a month as a maid, and dodgy cad Simon (Guy Middleton) has to put his penis in a shark’s mouth, or marry the first woman he speaks too, it’s one or the other for certain. It’s a charming affair, very British and very of its time, and bar George Cole’s occasionally meandering tale it’s extremely likeable.

Video Of The Week
The Betamax Years is a short film from Rhys Thomas OBE, director of The Kemps All True and Brian Pern, that he made back in 2002 but it’s still bloody great as akin to his A Year In The Life Of A Year specials it is a mish mash off pre-existing footage edited together so that the world is a much funnier if slightly odder place, with him using various clips from the late seventies and early eighties this time around.

Link Of The Week
Simon Munnery currently has an exhibition on at an art gallery in Bedford, and that’s inspired this Guardian article about when the worlds of art and comedy collide which despite a terrible title is an interesting read.
