Jeeves And Wooster Series 1 Episode 1
Like all right thinking men, women and animals, and maybe even children, back in the eighties and nineties I was a huge fan of Fry and Laurie, their sketch show A Bit Of Fry & Laurie still stands up to this day, and of course both have gone on to impressive careers since then. And yet for some crazy unknown reason I’d not seen their adaptation of Jeeves And Wooster until this week, despite it being critically acclaimed at the time even by hardcore fans of the much loved novels by PG Wodehouse. If like me you’ve somehow never seen it (which I guess may well be possible if you’re one of those young types you get these days) I’d definitely recommend doing so as it sees the extremely posh Bertrand Wooster (Laurie) stumble through high society aided by his valet Jeeves (Fry). Both are perfectly cast, Laurie has the showier role and gets to pull silly faces and lurch in to daft adventures but Fry anchors it beautifully, and I can’t imagine anyone being more perfect as these two much loved individuals. The first episode introduces all of the characters efficiently as Aunt Agatha tries to match up Bertie with a woman he doesn’t love and a big old farce ensues, with Jeeves masterminding the whole thing so that Wooster escapes with his single status intact, and it’s a frothy, frivolous and very funny affair, and something I now plan to watch the rest of very soon indeed.

JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales Season 1 Episode 3
I really didn’t get on with the first episode of this new Adult Swim show but thought I might be being unfair, it was only the pilot after all. But the second episode was poor and the third is the worst yet, a retelling of the Red Riding Hood fairy tale where Red is transporting illegal fairy dust so that she can get “life saving ass medicine” for her boyfriend the Woodsman, with the Big Bad Wolf a border patrol officer and Grandma is the big bad behind the drug trade. A vaguely modern update of the tale then, but it doesn’t do anything funny with the plot, and most of the time it’s full of tiresome gross out humour, arse jokes, blood and gore and it’s the kind of shock humour you’ll have seen countless times before, and an example of Adult Swim at its very laziest. Throw in some of the ugliest animation I’ve ever seen and dialogue which feels like it was written by a drunk twelve year old, and this is a series that I not only find unfunny but also am rather agitated by the fact that it exists.

She Loves Me
This pro-shot musical from 2016 stars Zachary Levi and Jane Krakowski, and the first half an hour is dripping with so much charm that it’s almost drowning in it. It’s an extremely old fashioned affair too as Zachary Levi’s store clerk has a romance via letter thanks to a “Lonely hearts club” with a mysterious woman – but shock horror, she turns out to be Amelia (Laura Benanti) a fellow colleague who he doesn’t really get on with. They’re supposed to finally meet up but upon reaching the cafe Levi is shocked to see who his beau is, and for a fair old while she’s unaware that he knows the truth. Meanwhile Jane Krakowski’s fucking a colleague but he’s something of a cad who’s screwing the boss’s wife, with the boss rather shockingly attempting suicide around the hour point, and so she starts regretting falling for him. It’s a slightly odd mix and Krakowski’s storyline isn’t quite as intriguing as the main plot, which is a shame as I’m an enormous fan of hers and the character she plays is an engaging one, but she does at least have the best song of the show as her tale of finding love in a library is an alluring and amusing creation. This really is Levy’s show though, with him getting the funniest lines and the majority of the stage time, and though I normally enjoy a slightly more alternative a musical this is still very likeable, a simple, innocent affair perhaps, but an undoubtedly engaging one which if the songs were slightly punchier could have become a classic.

Where’s Marlowe?
A low budget indie comedy, this was originally shot as a pilot before having additional material added to it to make it feature length, and is based around a modern day Private Eye who’s struggling to get by, and two filmmakers who are making a documentary about him and his partner. It’s nothing that special to be honest, but it is gently funny throughout, and the main reason it’s worth watching is for a superb central performance from the late and greatly missed Miguel Ferrer, who really shines here. Plus there’s early appearances from folks like Mos Def, John Slattery and Giancarlo Esposito (though only in two scenes, sadly) which makes it quite interesting too. So, yeah, not a classic by any means, but there are a lot of worse ways to spend 90 minutes…

Video Of The Week
David Mills is a beautifully acerbic stand up and he’s put together three sketches under the title “That Guy” so far, with Joe Sutherland, Beth Vyse, Thanyia Moore, Sukj Ojl, Rose Johnson and Daniel Cook also among the casts. One plays around with gender pronouns, another is about various supposed weeks like “London Coffee Week” and “Take Your Mentally Ill Fish To Work Week”, while the third mocks wellness supplements and the concept of manliness, and all are really funny and full of fantastic examples of witty wordplay.

Link Of The Week
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is a film everyone loves and if you don’t then, well, it’s either the loony bin for you or a second viewing at the least, and this oral history of how it was made is a lovely read, even if a couple of the key players are missing.
