Solar Opposites Season 1 Episodes 2 and 3
While chatting about Solar Opposites a friend pointed out how the Pupa is kind of like Maggie from The Simpsons in that she doesn’t say a word but sometimes goes off and has exciting adventures, and is far smarter than anyone that age should be, and now I can’t help but notice how sometimes the other two kids Yumyulack and Jesse are like Bart and Lisa at times, at least when they’re not being similar to Louise from Bob’s Burgers. Throw in the fact that Korvo is so similar to Rich Sanchez it’s all but ridiculous and it’s starting to feel a little bizarre how unoriginal the show is, something that Roiland and co don’t seem to care about in the slightest as they’ve introduced a number of characters in “The Wall”, where Yumyulack keeps all of the humans he’s shrunk down to a tiny size, and which is a clear riff on futuristic films like Escape From New York. The show isn’t bad in any way and is often really funny, Roiland is great at keeping the show impressively inventive and throws in all manner of weird oddities and daft bits of dialogue, but the sense that it’s something that’s been done countless times before pervades and so is preventing me from enjoying it as much as I’d like to. It was originally made for Fox before ending up on Hulu and perhaps that’s why it’s so unoriginal, but I really hope that if it comes back for a second season (which seems all but certain give that it’s a rating hit) Roiland shakes it up a little and comes up with more creative plots and characters.

Daniel Kitson – The Interminable Suicide Of Gregory Church
When Daniel Kitson announced that he was going to be screening his award winning Edinburgh show online but that only a certain amount of tickets would be available rather predictably everyone became rather excited, as Kitson isn’t someone who often releases his previous work. But when tickets went on sale rather frustratingly the website crashed, though that shouldn’t have been a surprise as Kitson’s a popular bugger and tickets are always difficult to get hold of for his gigs. Two hours of refreshing ensued (with an hour’s break in the middle as I had to work annoyingly) but I got there in the end, and for once it’s an occasion when such annoying fuckery was worthwhile. Gregory Church is a superb piece of storytelling from Kitson where after being shown around a house by an estate agent he supposedly finds 30,000 letters in a loft, and so tells the tale of a man’s life and his supposed suicide. The framing device allows Kitson to dive in and out of Church’s life, picking out a mixture of poignant and routine moments from his existence, to create a portrait of an individual that’s both funny and thoughtful. It ends slightly abruptly and would have worked better if Kitson had allowed a few seconds of silence before wrapping everything up, just so the sentiment could have sunk in, but otherwise I’ve no complaints, he’s apparently planning on releasing more work in the near future and even if it means more annoying hours spent trying to get tickets I’m all but certain it’ll be worthwhile.

Jimmy O. Yang – Good Deal
Jimmy O. Yang’s star is rising and deservedly so as he’s superb in Silicon Valley and a pretty great stand up too, but this special is slightly uneven. It starts strongly with some great mockery of Matt Damon’s appalling The Great Wall movie from 2016, and he ties that in with him being under a lot of pressure when it comes to representing Asian people in general, but a routine on dating is pretty weak, and I lost interest when he started talking about reality tv and house fixing shows. Fortunately he returns to much funnier material when talking about his father, how he was sent to a ping pong training camp (“It was basically Fortnite with ping pong paddles”), and his father’s pep talk is a highlight. Then it gets blander with some jokes about the horror of tiny gym shorts, but once again improves when he’s back chatting about his father and how he became an actor after Jimmy did, and a successful one at that. The rest of the show is either about his parents or his trips abroad and the way he’s treated as an immigrant and it’s much funnier, so it’s just a shame he dipped in to more tedious subjects occasionally rather than sticking with tales of family life, as that’s definitely where he’s at his funniest.

How To Marry A Millionaire
Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable conspire to find themselves rich husbands in this romcom which starts off in an amusing enough fashion but then becomes quite bland for far too long. The performances are strong but Monroe’s not in it enough and I was surprised at how weak a lot of the dialogue was, and felt disappointed by it overall, Monroe’s in a fair few great films but sadly given her great her co-stars normally are it’s not really worth bothering with.

Video Of The Week
Mark Proksch is quickly becoming the best thing about What We Do In The Shadows (and this is a show with a superb cast), but he started out with a very different character, Kenny Strauss who claims he’s a master yo-yo-ist, and who appears on various local magazine tv shows without them having a clue that he’s playing a character, and a hilariously inept one at that, and this compilation of his appearances is often very, very funny indeed.

Link Of The Week:
Following on from the above, here’s an interview with Proksch for Vulture where he offers a great insight in to the character he plays and how much input he has in to the series, and it’s a very funny read to boot.
