Oh Hello On Broadway
I love John Mulaney a ridiculous amount and his stand up shows are some of my all time favourites, and I quite like Nick Kroll too, because oh yes, damning with faint praise never goes out of style round these parts. Yet until last weekend I’d never watched this show from the both of them where they take their “Oh Hello” characters Gil Faizon (Kroll) and George St. Geegland (Mulaney) on to the Broadway stage, that was quite the oversight too as it’s one of the funniest comedy specials I’ve seen in years, as these two comedians take on these slightly cruel, slightly mean, slightly eccentric but never less than hilarious creations and use them to send up theatrical life in gloriously funny ways. It’s not just the two of them rambling away either, as they present a play supposedly vaguely based on their real lives which sees them about to be evicted from their rent controlled apartment, and which contains amazing bits of dialogue like “George is hung like a hotel painting, in that it’s crooked and has seen awful things” that had me howling. There’s also flashbacks to when they were younger, a short bit of their chat show “Too Much Tuna” which features a guest appearance from Steve Martin, and a surreal dance sequence where “George and Gil descend the stairs like two walking swastikas”, all of which is never less than hilarious, and sometimes more than that. It ends in an extremely satisfying manner, and is a rare piece of live comedy that I definitely look forward to watching again in the future as it had me laughing such an incredible amount.

Emily Heller – Ice Thickeners
Currently available on youtube for free this is a great stand up set from Heller, best known as one of the writers of HBO’s Barry, who covers an impressive number of subjects in the hour in very funny but also insightful ways. Right at the beginning she shows just how great a stand up she is as she attacks Trump, but rather than just ripping him apart based on his looks or the idiotic comments he makes she compares him to the film Air Buddies, with the routine only getting funnier as she tries to come to terms with life in this strange new world where such a man can be elected to the highest office in the land. It’s not all Trump bashing though, she has some really strong material about mental health and therapy, how she’s only a vegetarian because she loves farting, and that she has no interest in losing weight as after she put on forty pounds she ended up having a lot of sex and earning a sod load of money, and all of these topics are dealt with in original and inventive ways. That’s also the case with the Ice Thickeners of the title, where she discusses how she has no interest in small talk, and her material about her boyfriend and online dating is just as fantastic as everything else in a set which is definitely a must see.

Sam Morril – I Got This
Another special that Comedy Central have put online, Morril’s set isn’t quite as good as Heller’s but it’s definitely a show that I largely enjoyed, even if the way he mostly tackles edgy subjects sometimes gets a little bland on occasion. Most of the time it’s pretty damn sharp however, starting effectively with discussion of MeToo, issues of consent and male privilege, all of which he makes some very astute and thoughtful comments about, and his material about negging, serial killers and “Fun Facts About Hitler” made me laugh as well. He’s on slightly shakier ground when it comes to Law and Order SVU and his thoughts about sexual abuse were a little poor, while some of his jokes about abortion just weren’t that funny, but most of the time this is a fun set, albeit not an essential one. Were The World Mine
Timothy’s an openly gay student at an all boy’s school who are putting on a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but other members of the faculty and a homophobic student complicate matters, and then life becomes odder when Timothy invents a love potion which he uses to turn the whole (or at least some) of the school / town gay. An American indie musical which looks (and feels) like it was made in the early nineties, there’s some problems when it comes to the issues of consent but it means well, and does at least address it at the end. It’s also a little slow, and slightly lacking in songs (and some of the ones we do get are way too short) but it at least has some great performances (including Twin Peaks’ Wendy Robie as the drama teacher), the script is strong and the second half’s largely pretty fun.

Video Of The Week
Zach and Viggo are two comedians I’ve heard a huge amount about but not yet seen live, and this sketch where they play two police officers makes me all the more frustrated about that as it’s exquisitely funny, a silly but extremely lovable affair packed with a great selection of very daft but hilarious moments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fdJphWTSPY&feature=emb_logo

Link Of The Week
Swedish cartoonist Daniel Björk has a strange old mind which is why I’m so fond of him, and currently on Instagram he’s posting his reimaginings of horror films as if Disney had amimated them, and the best (Society, Hannibal, Basket Case) are truly funny stuff indeed. https://news.avclub.com/cartoonist-imagines-what-horror-movies-will-inevitably-1842751613 / https://www.instagram.com/p/B-h90TVKrzA/?utm_source=ig_embed
