comedy snippers 05042020Short reviews of comedy old and new, and other bits of info which don’t fit anywhere else on the site, updated weekly.

Super Buddies
Continuing my mission to watch every film with a talking dog in it, I originally was going to post a full length review of the seventh entry in to the Air Bud series of talking dog films but then I stupidly spilt coffee over my laptop and destroyed it, which wasn’t the most fun I’ve had lately somewhat shockingly. Anyhow, this is a ridiculous affair as our beloved puppies gain super powers, a weird alien tries to destroy the Earth, and all manner of convoluted nonsense takes place in a film which I’m genuinely fond of. Even if you don’t have the quite frankly weird and questionably disturbing fondness for talking animal films that I have it’s one of the silliest family comedies I’ve ever seen, the majority of the jokes / puns work, the cast have a ball (and not just the canine ones!), with Michael Teigen as the local police sheriff sharing some of Jim Carrey’s abilities for unusual physical comedy, especially when possessed by the weird alien bastard who is hellbent on destroying Earth. John Ratzenberger is also on hand as a Grandfather who fancies himself as a superhero, at least on a minor scale, while Colin Hanks voices the bad guy and is so amusing that he almost makes up for his atrocious performance in Dexter (though not quite), and Amy Sedaris also pops up as a talking chicken, so you can pretend you’re watching it just because like all sane comedy fans you think she’s amazing and want to see everything she’s ever made rather than just because it’s a genuinely good slice of straight to dvd silliness.

Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens Season 1 Episode 2
I know, I know, I’m way behind on this very funny Comedy Central show which ended it’s first season last week, and the excuse is the usual one in that the amount of comedy produced means sometimes even when I write a positive review of a first episode of a show I sometimes I fail to get around to watching the rest of it. But once again now I’ve seen the second episode I’ll definitely finish off the season very soon as it’s a smart, sassy delight, and Awkwafina’s Grandmother is already the breakout comedy character of 2020 and deserving of her own show if for some reason this isn’t picked up for a second season – which it supposedly has been, though an official confirmation from Comedy Central has yet to be issued. I’d be amazed if it wasn’t however as this episode is also a real delight as Nora is persuaded not to masturbate all day but spend it with her grandmother in Atlantic City, though when she counts cards she’s soon in trouble and the same applies with her grandmother when they encounter a group of elderly Korean women hogging their usual table. The script is sharp and funny and pleasingly unpredictable, Awkwafina’s a great acerbic lead, yet the show also has a fair amount of heart (especially when it comes to dealing with a friend of Nora’s who’s lost her way) and the combination makes it essential viewing.

Future Man Season 3 Episode 2
On Friday I published a fairly positive review of Future Man but given how inconsistent the series had been in the past couldn’t confidently say the rest of the final season would satisfy, but so far it appears to be on much firmer ground with this second episode having a lot of great moments in it too. The show has always been at it’s best when it’s leaping all over history and that’s definitely the case once again as Josh and co head back to France, Japan and then Russia, though each time they change the timeline (initially by inventing sliced bread several centuries too early, and then killing a Samurai who insulted Wolf’s tea making abilities) and the Future Time Cops led by Marshall Mathers (hoho!) are able to track them down, hence why in this episode they visit so many times and places. Highlights include Josh talking about World War One only for Tiger to get off on it, and a sex scene accompanied by a Russian version of Foreigners “I Want To Know What Love Is”, but all of it was strong in general and the storyline continued to intrigue as well as Josh chats away with someone he’s starting to think may well be God, but clearly definitely won’t be.

The Magicians
I ummm’d and ahhh’d over writing a full review of this superb series for the site but though it’s often very very funny it’s not technically a comedy, and more of a Sometimes Dramatic Sometimes Humorous Fantasy (Or Somdrasomhumfan, as all the cool kids call it). But I couldn’t resist commenting on it here in Comedy Snippets as it’s made me laugh over the years far more than many a traditional comedy has, and also because it’s come to an end I felt the need to lament it’s final episode. A Syfy series that’s full of sex, swearing (at least if you watch the online version rather than the edited tv edition) and all round insanity, the show actually started off a little shakily and the first five or six episodes could be accused of being “Dawson’s Creek but with magic”, though thankfully it soon found it’s feet and became a series that’s more than worthy of your adoration. Throughout it had a very knowing and often quite meta sense of humour without overdoing it on that front, and became one of the most impressively inventive series I’ve ever seen as action took place in the magical university of Brakebills and the fantasy land of Fillory, the latter being a bizarre place and then some and which allowed the writers to play around with (and often satirise) many a conventional fantasy trope. The show also contained a number of egotistical and very twattish gods, and the best version of Santa Claus I’ve ever seen (whose last appearance was at the end of the penultimate episode of the show when he turned up to save the day and announced his arrival with the line “Hohoho Motherfuckers”). I’m only at the tip of the iceberg as to why it’s such a special show (and the way it treats and celebrates it’s female characters could be a 20,000 word essay alone) and have already written too much for a traditional Comedy Snippets entry, but in short, if you’ve any time for fantasy in the slightest you’ll want to watch every single second of this amazing series which is one of the best of the 21st century, and one that even though it only ended on Wednesday night I’m already missing a ridiculous amount.

Video Of The Week
It’s something a bit different this week as we’re recommending a channel rather than just one video, but “Laughing Around” is from the people responsible for the fantastic 2Northdown comedy venue and it has some superb videos from the likes of David Mills, Eshaan Akbar, Jack Barry, Eleaor Tiernan, Tiernan Douieb, Ali Brice and many more CTW favourites.

Link Of The Week
To try and cheer us all up Vulture got in contact with a sod load of tv writers and asked them to come up with stories concerning the Coronavirus for 35 different series, some of which are still airing and some of which aren’t, with entries for 30 Rock, You’re The Worst, Joe Pera Talks With You and Brooklyn Nine-Nine among the highlights.
