Short reviews of comedy old and new, and other bits of info which don’t fit anywhere else on the site, updated weekly.

The Windsors Series 3 Episode 2
Last week I reviewed the first episode and liked it a fair bit, feeling it wasn’t the show at it’s very best but it certainly hadn’t jumped the shark or anything close to it. My main complaint with the episode was that when it mocked real life events it wasn’t as fun, and that seems to have been proven with this one which is a much dafter and more enjoyable affair as we witnessed what happens when Charles, Camilla, William and Kate visited Kate’s parents, and Beatrice went to Glastonbury. The Glastonbury plot was the slightly stronger one as it gave Beatrice the spotlight for once, also allowed her to experience life as a normal person who is appalled by “commoners” and the portaloos (though anyone who wasn’t would be a little strange) and who falls in a love with Ash, a supposedly normal bloke who gets the best line of the episode when Beatrice confesses who she is only for him to say “Oh, the one who’s Dad’s a paedo?”. The Middleton’s plotline was almost as good though, with Simon Day hamming it up as Mike Middleton and Julia Deakin delivering some gorgeously vicious lines about how Camilla will never be queen, and William’s desperation to be liked and fit in with Mike had some extremely funny moments too, the best being his excitement at (briefly) discussing football, but his confused query “Now, what’s email?” also made me laugh hard. Hadyn Gwynne really is superb as Camilla, though Harry Enfield is bloody great too, and well, there’s not a weak link in the entire cast, with this continuing to be one of the best sitcoms Channel 4 have made in years.

Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast
The quality of this podcast ebbs and flows a little depending on the guest / just how exhausted Richard is, but it’s been going through a fantastic run recently with Frank Cottrell-Boyce turning out to be one of the best interviewees the show’s ever had as he had a fantastic selection of anecdotes about working on various films over the years, the majority of which were nicely self deprecating, and his tale of his writing for the Olympics Opening Ceremony and the Queen’s involvement really should be sought out as soon as you can. But also great is a recent appearance from Sara Pascoe, it’s her third go on the podcast and quite possibly the best yet as she has a freewheeling conversation with Richard and is quite happy to interrogate him about his life, and even manages to make Herring’s obsession with game shows a very funny element for a change. Also fun (and fascinating) was an episode with Paul Sinha who talked about his recent Parkinson’s diagnosis in a passionate manner while not forgetting to be funny too, and Kate Robins had some great anecdotes from her long and varied career, the best of which involved her representing England in the Eurovision Song Contest back in the eighties and her creating the theme tune to Surprise Surprise. I’ve not yet caught Tim Minchin’s appearance but I hear good things about that too, so it’s definitely worth checking out this recent batch of episodes even if like me you sometimes struggle with the series.

Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet Season 1 Episodes 2 and 3
The first episode of this new Apple Tv series was pretty great and I liked it a fair deal but then got distracted by many another show and have only just returned to it. I’m planning to binge the rest however as the second and third episodes are even better, it now feels fully formed and these episodes could be from a potential second or third season as the characters work so well together and they’re having fun with the plotlines. The second episode was the better of the two (but only slightly) as it explored Danny Pudi’s character Brad, as his worth was questioned and he showed just how valuable he was to the company by fucking with everyone in a lot of funny ways, while equally as enjoyable was a storyline where Ian and CW Longbottom had to come up with a backstory for a character they put no thought in to previously. While I’d always liked F. Murray Abraham I’d never thought about him as a great comedic actor, but he’s showing that he’s bloody superb at it, and the way he bounces off of Robert McElhenney’s lead has been a constant delight. The third episode was almost as strong as well, with the series examining the shittier aspects of gaming fandom when a bunch of nazis start making their political beliefs known by making large swastikas in the landscape, with certain members of the company not quite sure this is such a bad thing as they are paying customers after all. Plus in both episodes there’s been a extremely likeable Will They / Won’t They thing going on between two of the testers which adds a pleasingly warm element to the whole thing, making it something that’s a constant pleasure to watch.

The Big Sick
The true(ish) story of how Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gardner fell in love, it’s been critically praised by pretty much all the major reviewers but I thought it was only quite good. It’s two hours long but could have easily been cut down to eighty minutes, and there are scenes between Kumail and Emily’s parents which go on for ages and didn’t particularly involve me. It’s a shame as it is very funny in places (and I think I’d have enjoyed it a lot more if we’d seen more of Kumail’s stand up life) and the romance between Kumail and Emily is really sweet and believable, but ultimately it just goes on for too long and really needed to be edited down.

Video Of The Week
Joz Norris is one of our favourite comedians and here he’s teamed up with Matthew Highton to explore the world of Deep Fakes, so you’ll get to see Joz fake an orgasm and point a carrot at a psychopath among other very funny parodies of well known movies in a sketch which made me laugh a great deal.

Link Of The Week
Blizzard Comedy is not only the website for one of Manchester’s best comedy clubs, but it has a fantastic selection of interviews with some of the best up and coming comedians around too, all of which are a fantastic read.
