Short reviews of comedy old and new, and other bits of info which don’t fit anywhere else on the site, updated weekly.

Sex Education Season 2 Episodes 1 – 3
I was a late comer to Sex Education but then ended up binging it quickly as it was a really fun insight in to how crazy life is as a teenager, and the Will They / Won’t They plotline with Otis and Maeve was all kinds of sweet. But this second season is something I’m not quite as enchanted by, it’s still great, don’t get me wrong, but I’m only watching an episode every few days rather than two or three a day. I think that’s partially because of the way they’ve separated the characters, Maeve and Otis haven’t had many scenes together at all, Adam’s been off at military school (though he does return in the third episode, admittedly), and though Eric and Otis have had some fun moments, Otis’s relationship with Ola isn’t interesting me that much, and neither does the combination of Jean and Jakob. There have been some quite affecting moments, and Aimee’s rather upsetting storyline is a powerful one, but other plotlines feel a little soapier than those that were found in the first season, and Maeve’s antics with her Mother aren’t fun in the slightest. Still, this is only three episodes in, and it is a pretty damn great show, just one that I’m not finding quite as enjoyable as it was last year.

Avenue 5 Season 1 Episode 2
Despite a myriad of negative reviews I quite enjoyed the first episode of Armando Iannucci’s latest sitcom, the space set Avenue 5, but unfortunately this second episode was a far weaker affair. After the series plotline was set up last week, mostly concerning how long the ship is going to be stuck in space for, this time around it was a far blander affair and all too often consisted of a selection of scenes where people were either angry or annoyed with each other, and there wasn’t much more to it than that. The first episode had a nice selection of surreal and silly aspects that reminded of Douglas Adams, but frustratingly they were mostly absent this time around and so far too much of the running time was taken up with irritating bickering between characters who became more irritating by the second. Zach Woods still had a few funny moments and is quickly becoming the MVP of the series, with his rendition of Starman with slightly altered lyrics being a welcome break from the moaning passengers, and I’m very fond of the nihilistic elements of his character with the moment he shouted “Eat the rich!” being a real delight, but he’s not enough to save the show from being a tad weak. Hopefully this was a one off misfire and next week will be an improvement, but if it’s just more scenes of people ranting at each other I’m not completely sure how long I’ll stick with it.

Digger Volume One
Digger started out as a web comic before being published as a graphic novel, and as well as being smart, strange and adorable it’s also often very funny throughout, though as a caveat I have only so far read this first volume so it could all go very wrong for our wombat hero who having gone for a bit of a dig has become lost and so encounters a variety of very strange characters including A living statue of the Hindu god Ganesh, a hyena called Ed and a strange Shadow creature who is fortunately on Digger’s side. Written and drawn by Ursula Vernon the art is pretty damn stunning in places, and also all rather cute too, and it’s a story that had me gripped from the very first pages and I can’t wait to find out what happens to our rather unusual collection of characters, and whether or not Digger ever does make it home or not.

A teen sex Groundhog Day type thing where an inept lover gets to go back and repeat his sexual antics until he stops prematurely ejaculating all over the shop, this probably sounds awful and you’d be right to have some reservations. It’s frustrating however because certain elements do work, the first half of the film sees him having to repeat his university interview with a very game Alan Tudyk each day, as well as avoid getting pissed on and all manner of hijinks like that, and it’s slightly smarter than all that suggests and initially there are some cute moments. Unfortunately it’s also pretty cliched, the central lead fella is a bit dull and he stupidly fancies the hot dumb blonde girl despite it being clear that the hot smart brunette[ obviously wants to fuck him, and worst of all is that in the second half it gets all a bit shitty when the main fella gets over confident and forces students to kiss, punches a girl and sexually assaults one of his teachers (It’s not quite as bad as that sounds, but he grabs hold of there breasts and the scene is played for laughs, somewhat unpleasantly). He does at least repeatedly kicked in the balls for doing such a thing, but it’s still bleak (and lazy) stuff, and even after he sinks in to a depression he’s still an arsehole until he realises who he should shag and finally breaks the cycle. It’s a shame as the first half showed potential, and Alan Tudyk has fun with his role, but the second half really spoils it and makes it not really worth watching.

Video Of The Week
I’ve always had a fondness for Iain Lee, even though he was “An arrogant Chris Morris rip-off” in the 11 O’Clock Show – and that’s not my description but that of the man himself. He’s had quite the varied career, and can now be found producing his best work on Talk Radio, and he’s also just started producing a commentary on the early episodes of the 11 O’Clock Show, where he’s brutally honest about the show’s weaker elements, while revealing a lot of fascinating info about what was taking place behind the scenes.

Link Of The Week
A great comedy site I should have linked to ages ago, Clownster has a fantastic selection of reviews of some of the best stand up in the comedy world, be it where they saw it performed live or have just watched or listened to it at a later date, all of which are impressively written and enjoyable to read.
