Short reviews of comedy old and new, and other bits of info which don’t fit anywhere else on the site, updated weekly.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10 Episode 1
I struggled with the ninth season of Curb, it felt flabby and forced and though some episodes were still fun it definitely felt like that the show was running out of steam and that it might be time to take it up to the farm upstate and have it shot in the head repeatedly, like at least eighty or ninety times. Shocking that would have been overkill however (no, really!) as this first episode of the tenth series is a real return to form, indeed it was densely packed with a huge amount of funny scenarios as Larry upset not only a heavily pregnant woman but Everybody Loves Raymond actor Phil Rosenthal, coffee shop owner Mocha Joe, a waitress at a party and managed to get in to a farcical sex accident which saw Cheryl rushed to hospital. That only accounts for about half of the very funny scenes in the episode too, what with some great moments with Richard Lewis, Larry wearing a Make America Great Again cap just so people would leave him alone, while Susie Green’s anti-Larry tirades were as hilarious as ever. A lot has been set up which will no doubt pay off as the series continues, with Larry’s accidental #MeToo moment clearly going to return to haunt him, especially as they’re having a lot of fun with the fact that Jeff looks like Harvey Weinstein, but his ongoing war with Mocha Joe looks like it’ll be a great aspect too, along with whether or not he’ll get back with Cheryl, all of which I can’t wait to see as this was such a superb comeback for the series.

The Goes Wrong Show Series 1 Episode 4
After a couple of hit stage shows and some one off’s for the BBC, The Goes Wrong Show people now have a regular series where each week we supposedly get to see a live play being broadcast on the Beeb, only for it to end in hilarious disaster. So that’s it not the same old nonsense week in week out they switch it up a little and throw in a couple of ideas to keep things fresh, and in this episode as it was running short that they upped the number of adjectives so that there were lots of overly long descriptions in the script. It’s an okay gag when used once or twice but it quickly gets tiring, and that applies with nearly everything in the show, with the actors breaking props also a joke that becomes annoying shit after a few minutes. Some of it’s enormously contrived too, like where a pregnant woman uses a balloon instead of a cushion to show she’s pregnant (unlike any actress ever), as is a scene where when they can’t enter a room someone punches through the door and pours tea in to their hands rather than a cup, and a segment where one actor is forced to laugh insanely for ages in what’s one of the most painfully rubbish bits of comedy I’ve ever seen. It’s completely lacking in subtlety and the amount of things which go wrong is just a plain annoying, within about five minutes the whole thing becomes exasperating and shockingly irritating, and I ended up hating it with a passion by the end.

Mum Series 1 Episode 1
This much loved BBC sitcom came to an end recently and I missed the boat on it completely, but I’ve heard so many good things about it I thought I should finally check it out. The Mum of the piece is called Kathy, with the first episode starting at her husband’s funeral, which might sound a little grim but it’s carefully and thoughtfully handled, even if there is some minor cringe humour when her son Jason’s girlfriend Kelly arrives and constantly says daft things (my favourite being her comment “I’ve only ever been to one funeral and that’s when my dog died. I played the vicar”). Throughout this first episode Kelly’s completely unable to stop putting her foot in it, but to Kathy’s credit (and the show’s, for that matter) the character is handled sympathetically and for a long period of time Kathy never gets angry or annoyed with anyone despite having every reason to as other guests say and do things which would drive any normal person to despair within minutes. Of course the audience knows Kathy can only take so much and that she’s going to crack given the shit she’s on the end of, but when it finally takes place it’s just a minor moan to her friend Michael, and so sweet and touchingly played that it made me instantly enamoured with the series. So yeah, I was an idiot for not watching it beforehand, but at least now I get to binge it all so I guess life could be worse.

Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!
One of the best documentaries about cinema yet made, this is a no holds barred exploration of some incredibly tacky and yet beautifully insane Australian films mostly made in the seventies and eighties. Quentin Tarantino turns up as a talking head a bit too often but bar that I’ve no complaints, it’s packed with some incredibly funny behind the scenes anecdotes along with a shed load of quite quite mad clips from the films, and it was a rare occasion where I didn’t want the film to end.

Video Of The Week
How To Date A Magical Creature is a forthcoming web series that’s launching on Valentine’s Day and sees a tv host interview a number of well known supernatural folk like The Devil, Santa Claus, Death (and Death’s girlfriend), and Medusa among others, I’ve only seen the trailers so far but they look enormously funny, and I’d be amazed if this wasn’t a web series which was essential viewing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cTVXU-w_6A&feature=youtu.be

Link Of The Week
As Curb Your Enthusiasm has now returned Larry David’s doing a fair few interviews to promote it but I haven’t read any as detailed, funny or as interesting as this one from the often shit but in this case surprisingly great GQ.com: https://www.gq.com/story/larry-david-cover-profile-february-2020https://www.gq.com/story/larry-david-cover-profile-february-2020
