You’re The Worst Season 5
There’s a long and deeply personal reason as to why I hadn’t finished watching You’re The Worst s until now which would bore and probably annoy, but anyhow, over the past week I’ve finally watched the final seven episodes. From the get go it showed us that the wedding was going to go horribly wrong so plot wise it was all about how – though they deliberately wrong footed us over and over again and so it wasn’t because of Jimmy being unfaithful, Gretchen lying about being fired, or her theft of Edgar’s medication but because they realised that marriage wasn’t the right thing for the two of them personally, and making the decision to stay together on a daily basis was. From that brief summary it might sound a little disappointing but it actually worked effectively, with a flash forward showing a mixture of beauty and misery, and as season finale’s go it was pretty satisfying which given how many disappoint is something I shan’t complain about. The season as a whole was a great one too, with Edgar’s plotline where he’s being bullied by Paul F. Tompkins containing some beautifully funny moments, while quite sickening but also amusing was Paul, Becca and Vernon’s attempts at having a kid together (the sex scene being especially hilarious) and though it still dealt with serious themes and Gretchen’s depression was an element that was clearly always going to be a part of their lives, it was more entertaining and less upsetting than seasons 3 and 4 were, and a greatly appreciated return to the funnier tone of seasons 1 and 2.

The Skewer
This is a new Radio 4 series from comedian of Jon Holmes (The Eleven O’Clock Show, The Now Show) which is a selection of audio mash ups, a kind of mix of Chris Morris’s Blue Jam and Rhys Thomas audio fuckery in his A Year In The Life Of A Year shows, except that it’s nowhere near as good as either. Sometimes it’s snippets of dialogue from a well known figure intercut with someone else speaking, so for example you get Boris Johnson rambling away and talking shit and the Queen then saying “Jesus Christ”, or there’s a song and a clip from a news report, like in one part where there’s mockery of the decision to go ahead with fireworks in Australia over the New Year. There’s also a sort of Cassetteboy style song, except that, yeah, you guessed it, once again it’s not as good as his work, and one bit mixes the recent episode of Mastermind where someone thought Greta Thunberg’s name was Sharon with an episode of Eastenders, and yet despite it being a great idea it still fails to be funny. Towards the end it becomes even odder as it involves Camberwick Green character WIndy Miller and some bits of Donald Trump talking nonsense, a juxtaposition which I doubt many people will understand but even if you did you wouldn’t find it funny. So as you might just have guessed I’m not exactly a huge fan of this, I did want to like it, and the concept’s a great one, but most of the time I ended up cringing and sighing and didn’t laugh once, which is quite the feat.

Kongen Befaler (aka Taskmaster Norway)
Back at the beginning of December I reviewed the first episode of the Norwegian version of Taskmaster and lavished it with praise, and nine episodes later it turns out it deserved every single ounce of it. Managing to match the best of the UK series (well, maybe not series five where Bob Mortimer and Sally Phillips both created astonishingly beautiful moments of lunacy) it had the advantage of being able to cherry pick the best of the tasks from the nine series of the UK show admittedly but as our version has proven with the wrong contestants it can fall flat on it’s feet, but this lot kept it going in impressively unusual ways and only the prize task at the beginning was sometimes a bit dull, but hey, that applies with the UK show too and just serves as more proof that both should ditch it. Otherwise I’ve no complaints in the slightest, Atle Antonsen and Olli Wermskog grew in to their roles as host and co-host extremely effectively with Atle mocking poor old Olli in a number of very funny ways, and Bård Ylvisåker, Maria Stavang, Siri Kristiansen and Calle Hellevang-Larsen all proved them to be consistently amusingly imaginative, and only show winner Vegard Ylvisåker sometimes annoyed (as often seems to be the way with the victor of British series) but even he had his moments. In short, I really hope it returns soon, and the UK edition learns a few things from it too like having themed episodes (the Christmas one being a delight) and much shorter studio tasks.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two siblings, one uptight and the other all a bit chaotic who despite everything love each other. But they’re aghast when their parents decide to sell their childhood home, and so hold one last party with school friends they haven’t seen in decades. This got something of a kicking when it came out back in 2015, but I didn’t think it was too bad, with a few great jokes and strong set pieces. It’s definitely over long at 1h 57minutes, and the predictable dramatic bit, whilst brief, could have been easily cut, and I’m sure Fey and Poehler are capable of something much better than this, but it was alright for a lazy Sunday afternoon’s viewing.

Video Of The Week
Jordan Brookes won the big Edinburgh comedy award this year and deservedly so, his comedy brain is all kinds of unusual and that’s demonstrated here in this short sketch based around an ASMR Quiz on tv, only for it to suddenly spiral out of control in a very funny manner.

Link Of The Week
The AV Club used to be one of the best sites on the net yet now it’s only quite good, but at least it still posts some really interesting articles from time to time, and this is one of them where they explore humour in games, and why it’s so difficult to successfully make a good comedy game.
