Bojack Horseman Season 6 Episode 2
This has been a slightly odd season of Bojack so far with many an episode concentrating on just one character and the rest flitting about in the background. It’s a formula they used for the fourth season of Arrested Development as they couldn’t get the cast together when they wanted to but there’s of course no similar excuse for an animated show like this one. And it’s a device which I’m sometimes enjoying but sometimes struggling with, with the latter definitely being the case with this episode which followed Princess Carolyn and her unnamed baby, with echoes of the character featuring in every scene and her life becoming even more complicated as she tries to please everyone all of the time. There’s still some cute moments with Bojack (whose gag at the expense of David O. Russell was the highlight of the episode), Todd and Mr Peanutbutter, but Princess Carolyn’s adventures were deliberately anxiety inducing as she had to cope with being a single mother in the Hollywood system, and so just not that enjoyable at all. At least it did give her a win in the end, but I can’t help but wish that future episodes will be funnier and more enjoyable to watch.
Comedians Giving Lectures Series 1 Episode 2
In the review of the first episode I had some doubts about this series if only because the comedians chosen to give lectures weren’t that great, with only Natasia Demetriou’s effort being that funny. This episode had a much better line up though so I was hopeful it would be an improvement, but alas it was still only a partial success. First up was Ed Gamble who was given a lecture entitled “The Truth About Unwanted Arousal”, which as topics go might be easy to mine humour out of, but Gamble at least did so effectively. Yes he went off topic a few times and the jokes about sexy cartoon animals weren’t exactly the height of originality, but he’s a good enough comedian that it wasn’t a problem and his choice of Lumiere from Beauty and The Beast was a very funny one, as were the drawings and gags about of how to hide an erection. Unfortunately the episode didn’t really entertain that much afterwards, with Sindhu Vee’s “Why You Should Quit Your Job” containing some quite irritating segments, including one incredibly lazy bit where she recounted tales of other people quitting their jobs that she’d found online, and yet she still failed to make it funny. Even worse was her personal anecdotes about quitting banking and going full time in to motherhood, with her repeating a shit joke at one point and then having to all but beg the audience for applause – this is the first time I’ve seen Vee do stand up and based on it I won’t rush to catch her again. The show finally came to a close with Katherine Ryan, I’ve liked her a lot in the past but her lecture on “How To Spot A Liar” went off topic quickly, rarely returned to it, and though there were some funny moments (with a great “white lie” / racism joke being the best of the episode), it’s only okay material and Ryan’s stand up is normally much better than this. Overall then, I’d prefer to catch the comedians doing more honed stand up, and won’t be returning to this, especially as the normally reliable Sara Pascoe is such a small element of the show.
Living With Yourself Season 1 Episode 2
I keep on expecting this Paul Rudd starring comedy to go suddenly downhill as the advance reviews were mostly negative, but I’m still finding myself rather fond of it. Perhaps it’s Rudd’s innate charm but it’s a show which is filled with very cute moments, the best of which in this second episode were the “Best Version” of his character discovering the pleasures of life which was extremely infectious indeed. In general it’s playing with the idea of what it might be like to have a clone in your life in an engaging and unpredictable manner, Aisling Bea makes for a great supporting lead, the two dodgy scientists have some great lines, and currently I’ve no idea what direction the series will take, which is always a positive thing in my book.
A Town Called Panic
A feature length version of the animated French tv series, it might take a little while to get used to the animation style but otherwise this is one of the most charming and endlessly inventive films I’ve ever seen, and if you watch it and don’t fall in love with it it’s been scientifically proven that there is something badly wrong with you.
Video Of The Week
A lot of Channel 4 panel shows are quite annoying to watch despite having great guests, so it’s rather kind of Channel 4 to have put together compilation videos featuring certain comedians, with this one featuring James Acaster on various programmes like 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Virtually Famous and Sunday Brunch being very funny stuff indeed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=FJyN2G-t85Q
Link Of The Week
Oral History’s are always an entertaining read as a number of people involved in a production of a show or film talk about their memories of working on a project, and that applies with this Oral History of the Brendan Fraser film Airheads. Tying in with the film’s 25th anniversary it’s packed with funny tales, and is fantastic stuff in general.
