Danny’s House Season 1 Episode 1
Rapper Danny Brown hosts this new Viceland chat show which has been described as a mixture of Pee Wee’s Playhouse and The Eric Andre Show. It’s certainly more lighthearted and less chaotic than the latter, though it has a mixture of interviews and sketches all set in the studio so it certainly bares quite the resemblance. But unlike both of those shows there is an overall theme to the episode as it begins with Danny mulling over the possibility of aliens existing and whether or not they plan to enslave us, which is the main subject matter of the interviews he has with his guests, A$AP Rocky and Ron Funches. With A$AP Rocky it’s a bit bland and like watching two stoners having a ridiculous conversation, and so amusing in places but often prone to repetition and jokes which aren’t as funny as they think they are, but it’s livened up by a game of “Smash Or Pass” where they look at photos of aliens and decide which ones they’d like to fuck. Ron Funches is thankfully a much more amusing guest though, possibly unsurprisingly as he’s a professional comedian, and he comes out with the best lines of the episode when he suggest rappers could be extra-terrestrials and that “I’ve met a few of you guys and none of you seem mentally stable”, though almost as good is a bit with a guy who claims he was abducted and had sex with aliens. Inbetween the interviews there’s a couple of skits with various characters like “Peepers The Telescope” who spies on neighbours hoping to see an orgy but captures them just sitting around doing nothing, Sherm The Pizza Guy who pops by to deliver a pizza, with the gag being that the Pizza guy is obsessive and that “Your happiness means everything to me”, and Exhausted Delivery Guy, whose name sums up the idea, and all of it adds up to being likeable and silly, but not particularly essential tv. But bar Eric Andre’s, what chat show is?

Hot Date Season 1 Episode 1
This show airs on the Pop! channel, and I’d never heard of either until recently reading that it was coming back for a second season. This very first episode sees Murph (Brian K.Murphy) and Em (Emily Axford) setting up their new home, and being all hot and horny until Murph discovers the lingerie Em’s wearing was bought for her by her ex’s and is appalled. This leads to much discussion of ex partners and Em’s obsessions with them, so Murph looks up his ex Bridget (also played by Axford) and meets up with her, plus occasionally it cuts away to another couple on a date, and a fake dating show on tv, The Batchelorette Rebound, with the duo also playing the main characters in those segments too. The format allows Axford and Murphy (who also wrote the show) to play a variety of characters, and it’s largely daft and amiable stuff, it doesn’t have a huge deal to say other than that couples who’ve been together for a long time are stuck in their ways (but that might not always be a bad thing) and that it’s not a great idea to keep things of your ex’s – but it is consistently funny, both the leads are strong actors, and it’s a show I definitely recommend checking out.

Idiotsitter Season 1 Episode 1
This is No.258 in a series of 1,000,004 tv shows that I didn’t watch originally and am only now catching up with. Created by Jillian Bell and Charlotte Newhouse it stars Bell as Gene, a woman-child who refuses to grow up and after being arrested riding a stolen pony when drunk a judge orders that a babysitter is hired to watch her, with Newhouse being that woman. Stephen Root and Elizabeth De Razzo are her ridiculously rich parents who fuck off the moment they get the chance, leaving Newhouse’s initially uptight illie to look after her, in a show which made me chuckle a good few times but I didn’t exactly fall in love with it. Still, it’s only the first episode and there’s certain aspects which amused, but too much of the time it’s just Gene getting to be ridiculously obnoxious and Billie struggling to cope, at least until she gets drunk too and is also ridiculously obnoxious. I’m presuming they must develop the characters a little more than this as it lasted for 23 episodes in total, but in the pilot there’s not exactly a huge amount present which makes me want to see more of it, I do plan to give it one more shot due to having heard positive things elsewhere but if there isn’t a big improvement then I won’t bother with the rest.

Crimewave
I’m a huge fan of the Coen Brothers, well, up until Intolerable Cruelty, and Sam Raimi as well, and this is one of the best films all three have been involved in. Admittedly Crimewave won’t be to everyone’s tastes but it is a great, unpredictable slapstick comedy with some fantastically funny dialogue, and truly bizarre moments in it. Bruce Campbell’s superb in a cameo role, showing how adept he was at diverse roles long before his ‘comeback’ in Bubba Ho-Tep, Paul L Smith is a truly frightening villain, and even Reed Birney’s great, though sadly his career seemed to falter after this for a couple of decades.

Video Of The Week
Cousin Gregg (Nicholas Braun) is easily one of the best things about HBO’s Succession as he tries to manipulate others but often ends up being mocked and bullied, and this is a great skit from a recent Conan episode where he attempts to replace Andy Richter as Conan’s side kick, only for Conan to be distinctly unimpressed, with the sketch being one of the best things Conan’s done in ages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmSqS1DVjvg&t=120s

Link(s) Of The Week
Chris Morris is doing a lot of interviews right now promoting the slightly disappointing The Day Shall Come (a review of which will be up during the next couple of days), all of which make for fascinating reading , and these are the best I’ve seen so far- https://www.indiewire.com/2019/09/chris-morris-interview-the-day-shall-come-1202175870/ / https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/sep/27/this-isnt-a-paranoid-future-nightmare-the-explosive-return-of-chris-morris
